I am getting sucked into a massive project at work that is basically an internal SQL and Data user security audit and restructuring for the company. I can't say much more because ... rules. This whole world is a little new to me, and wanted to see if anyone here had some recommended reading on the fundamentals of MSSQL security or just good security policy in general. I know I have heard "Complexity is the enemy of security." Where do I go from there?

RE: Scott Alan Miller: Storage 101
I didn't get to make it up, but I have been watching the sessions and burning up my data plan. Thanks for posting these. I also wanted to take a minute to call out the guy sitting front and center to just surf the internet the entire time SAM is talking.

RE: Spice scale on Point hahah
I will take a 7. I grew reapers this year. Made some hot pickles, some spicy peach jam, and tonight going to make me a curry that no one else in house will touch.

RE: System Builder Newb Question
My last system build I started with the cheapest board I could find, It ran OK for about a year, then the board died with a blown cap. I decided to splurge and go to a top shelf gigabyte board to swap everything over too. Same stats, just a better board. The system was noticeably more stable and a little quicker. Personally, I will never go with a cheap board again.

RE: Robot Vacuum Cleaner- help me choose please
I had an iRobot 400 series, and my mom had a 500 series. The 500 is for sure much nicer than the 400, and I am sure the 800 is great. The biggest thing is maintenance. Make sure you run them on a scheduler daily and the charge base is a must. they work better when just tidying up verses trying to clean a weeks worth of dust on 1 charge. Dump the traps every day so they don't build up. Also, pull the brushes every few weeks especially if anyone has long hair in the home. You will probably have to change the battery after a couple years. It is all worth the effort to have a robot sweep your floors everyday while you are at work.

RE: Do Apple Products "Just Need More Work"?

I'll find out. I will be making the jump to Apple as my desktop in three days! A big jump for me. Windows and Linux I have used extensively, Apple Mac almost not at all. So this is going to be quite the transition for me to make.
With VMFusion and the synced user folders between mac and a Windows 7 VM migration is a breeze. I have been on this platform for 5 months now, and I hate to admit it, but I absolutely love it. Honestly the hardest idea for me to get over with Mac, is system files, are hidden, and you don't get to see them. You have your documents, and just don't worry about everything else. Good luck, and feel free to reach out if I can help.

RE: Lenovo Ushers in a New Era of Mobile Workstation Power and Performance with Lenovo ThinkPad P50 and P70
Can someone "explain it like i'm 5" why you need this kind of power in a mobile workstation? It seems like complete overkill for me.

RE: HVAC Filters
I have had a HVAC guy tell me the expensive ones cause too much resistance on the blower motor and can cause your system to wear out early. Buy the cheap ones and replace them often.

RE: Do Apple Products "Just Need More Work"?
@scottalanmiller So I have been meaning to ask you.. How do you like the Mac environment now that you have had a chance to play with it?

@creayt I have to ask what you are developing that needs 32GB of RAM.

Over the years I've been asked a few times "where is the Internet?", I usually just say Branson, Missouri. A place I only knew about because of The Simpsons.
I'm less than a 2 hour drive from Branson. Can confirm the internet is no where near that place. However, if you like dinner at 4:30 and Yakov Smirnoff, we have you covered.

RE: Why Does BASH on Mac OSX Rarely Save to History
Well i'm sitting in a little tea shop in Arkansas right now waiting on the Apple crew across the street to work on my server. I was complaining about having to drive 70 miles, that kind of puts a different perspective on things.

I am working though Catch 22
One of the classics that I've just never read.
That is exactly why I am reading it. My Boss brought it up while I was reading Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance (for the same reason) and said I was missing out. So I picked it up.

RE: Should We Remove Bloatware on Office PCs
I was a small enough shop to get away with it, but my personal answer is yes always. I would always do a reformat and install of the OS from a MSDN copy and use the OEM key from the device. It was extra work, but I was sure when it went out in the field there was nothing I wasn't aware off on the system, it was fresh, clean, and happy. Then I would then add it to the domain, and have all my other setup done by GPO. Yes I have mild OCD, but I didn't have to sorry about troubleshooting odd issues, and extra exposure from bloatware, and less 1 off "snow flake" issues because we didn't have a unified hardware spec.
