If you're going to say the disjoined nature of email is what makes it unique, then I'm going to say the same thing about SMS - it's totally disjointed, each carrier provides it's own connections for it's users, but allows for an interconnect between systems, like DNS allows interconnect between email servers.. .

Except the carriers OWN them, in silos. Email is not like that. You are misunderstanding the nature of the two things. Email uses the Internet to connect people, it is converged. SMS requires non-Internet connections between silos. At no point does it enter the converged, public domain.

Not even close to being the same.

Until you can run your own private SMS server, have no phone carrier, and know that it can reach everyone else with SMS and they can reach you, for free... you have no point to make. Free, open, public, converged. Show me another tech that comes close. SMS is the farthest on every point.

No chat solution has that either though.

I didn't argue that they did (except one does, I just didn't point it out.) My point is that email is the lowest common denominator and the only modern technology of its type. And my second point was that modern instant messaging was superior to SMS - not because they are perfect, but because they improve on SMS with SMS having no actual benefits.

However, XMPP actually does fix the problems. It covers all SMS basis, while also being free, open, converged, etc.

@scottalanmiller Yep, I just wanted to share the configuration I use as my daily driver because it makes working in the terminal that much more efficient. The OP mentioned wanting something that was a bit slicker and more powerful, and I think in addition to your choice of terminal, your choice of shell and other tools contributes to having a better experience. I prefer FISH for my shell, and tmux is my terminal multiplexor of choice. ZSH is another great alternative shell as well.

It's already patched. These things happen. While I'm a huge believe that Docker-like containerization has little proper use in production (see conversation on NodeBB's forums), this isn't a Docker problem. It's just a mistake that can happen when using containerization. Yes, Docker is more risky by being the brand new, shiny product rather than one with decades of testing and auditing. But it's minor as it was identified and patched very quickly.

We use email signing and encryption. Signing is on by default, and users encrypt emails that have sensitive information.

This is done via S/MIME cert using RSA 4096-bit encryption, and email clients that support digital signatures and encryption, such as Outlook, Thunderbird, etc.

This whole TLS clown fiesta was brought to my attention by one of our ISPs that is hosting one of our websites. I just ran the SSLLabs test against the domain that they host for us and the results came back showing that TLS 1.0 and 1.1 are not supported and it had fewer warnings. This is a great info. We are now working on disabling those cypher suites. I call this whole thing a win. 🙂

@thwr digital zoom is what you likely would be using on anything in this price range anyways.

Sure, but a proper lens would just be better.

OK, it gets even better. Just had a look at the price tag: https://shop.omg.de/ubiquiti-networks/unifi/unifi-video/ - will order one on monday 😉

do they work "standalone" for testing purposes? E.g. could you view a live stream or something like that without a DVR?

Yes, the cameras have a web interface where you can view video. Last time I checked they hadn't implemented to ability to record to microSD card yet though.

I can't imagine you can do 'magic zoom' from the camera's web interface. Which is something you will want to test out, because it is pretty awesome. I used it to capture licence plates. When I was setting it up you couldn't even do it directly from the NVR web interface, you had to use the phone App, I don't know if that has been changed.

I've noticed that one of cams even features 3x optical zoom. Would be awesome.

      Thanks for your feedback.

Yeah, I would have put the extra money down for that job, but that was before the UVC G3 Pro models were even announced, and the UVC Pro models were discontinued and out of stock everywhere. Just a UVC G3 model wasn't the ideal solution, but it managed to do the job.

Just looking at the router / firewall is where all the info is. Any given IP might be in use but not responding.

If he has access to the firewall. I took this to mean he's trying to determine if anyone else is using any of the IP addresses..

No one else can use them, as they can only be routed to his network.

And someone has to have firewall access. This is the only thing that is needed to answer this question.

@scottalanmiller I really, truly appreciate your patience and willingness to help. Thank you. I have reached out to the service to see what connection the vendor offers. It is Cloudsafe for those that would like to know.

Again thank you, I am really glad I found this group, everyone is top notch.

Chances are with a small provider like that, there is one way to use them and all decisions around "how" and "best practices" were made by whomever chose them as the service provider. There are unlikely to be any options around this.

@scottalanmiller I am hoping to apply what I have been learning about containers to solve requests like these so they can self serve, and I can be satisfied that it is done securely. In the training I was in yesterday about Ansible there was a lot of talk about what I think of as "traditional" IT department needing to be more agile lest the DEV part of DevOps start forming a shadow IT department. It's a long road and I am looking forward to it.

      Thank you MangoLassi community.

Containers really don't add much to this. Traditional VMs do this perfectly well. Nothing wrong with containers, but they are far more limited overall since they need a matching OS underneath them. Find if you are 100% Linux, but the moment you need Windows, it doesn't do much good. Traditional virtualization is the better path in the SMB.

@scottalanmiller I was following a training video about Chef. I mistakenly thought the instructor was using centos7, the OS he is using for the course is ubuntu. I provisioned a ubuntu vm and i am off to the races. I am new to containers and he is building containers that are centos7 images. Ignorance can be so painful. Thanks for everyone's patience.

Somewhat related, I use f.lux as an addon to my machines. Changes the hue depending on the time of day or can be manually set/scheduled.

I think RedShift does that on Fedora, but I've never tried.

Yes, it does, I just tried.
