@pmoncho We're ditching the H330. Boss just ordered the H730P.

That, in the long run, is probably the best call. Any way you can get the boss to add on the SD Card module? That will be a benefit also if you stay with ESXi.

@NetworkNerd, @pmoncho , I'm still having no luck over here. I've tried 6.5, 6.7 and 6.7 U2. All with Dell ESXi and without. Dell is saying that they think it's because this specific server doesn't have a PERC cache. Does that sound like nonsense to you all or not? I know the previous machine (which I had 0 zero issues other than forgetting to install VMWare Tools on initially), worked fine, but it DOES have a PERC cache...

Which RAID card do you have in the server according to the BIOS or iDRAC?

      PERC H330 Adapter

Well, they are right that the PERC H330 does not have a cache. Based on a few google searches, others have had similar issues with this card depending on the RAID level.

So, what type of drives do you have and what RAID level are you using?

Yeah. The previous admin used shitty USB keys. Once I switched to Sandisk, I have not had any problems. One was and old USB key with a microcenter label, the other three were Transcend. Man, those SUCK!

Did you mean loaded, as in online and working?

Why do it then and not just shut it down, pull it and make a copy?

Oops my bad. Yes I did. typing in haste as I was headed out the door.

One can shut it down and then make a copy but I have done it while the system was up and running also.

      @G-I-Jones

You can use these instructions or others you find on google.
      https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/2042141

So, if the USB dies, you reload the same version of ESXi onto new USB key, keeping the storage drive in tact, set IP address and then restore the config and reboot. Boom! all done. It is that easy as I had to do it once.

I recommend backing up the config every time you make a change. I never really delved into profiles either but from what I hear, you can save those in vCenter. Once you add the server back, reload the profile, reboot and you should be good to go.

ESXi is loaded all into memory after boot up. Other than USB disk checks, nothing is stored on the USB key after the hypervisor is loaded. It mostly writes to the USB key on reboot/shutdown.

If you use a USB/SD key, you will need to create a log folder on your storage volume to save all the log files. After install, set the ScratchConfig parameter with the correct path and reboot (It is easy so don't worry).

I agree with @DustinB3403 My new 440 has SD cards in a RAID 1 so I feel much better.

On the flip side, I have only had four USB keys go bad on me in 11 years with 13 servers. It is not a big sample size but it is something.

I like to use SanDisk Ultra Fit 32GB. Going strong for 6 years so far. Plus they are small so it can won't mess with the bezel or knock it with your hand or shoulder. Transcend kinda suck. Had three of those go bad on me over 8 years.

      @pmoncho Directly to HD

This is fine for a lab but do not do this for production. It could make upgrading/reloading much more difficult later.

For VMware, I would use USB or SD cards if possible. ESXI is only like 500 MB's and that is it. You can store the ESXi logs on normal storage. There are numerous sites out there with instructions.

Did you use the Dell ESXI Image?
Did you update all drivers, along with NIC drivers on the host?

On🌶 there is a post about 6.7 U3 running crappy on Dell's. I don't know if there was a resolution on that or not. (Based on no definite answer, I have a new R440, Single 4210 CPU, RAID 1 SSD's and 128GB RAM with 6.7U2 with no issues)

If none of @marcinozga fixes work, you may just want to start from scratch, update all drivers, use Dell OEM Esxi 6.7U2, create a generic W2016 VM with 2 CPU's, 12 GB RAM and 100 GB drive for the OS (we can add drives later).

Use VMXNET NIC adapter instead of E1000e. It will only add the NIC after you install guest tools.

That should fly (depending on the HD's you have installed) when all done.

If that all works fine, then you can try again with 6.7 U3.

I'm on season two of The Expanse and it's finally really grabbed my attention.

I mean season one was OK - but definitely not the best SciFi out there. I suppose if hard science type stuff is more important to you, then perhaps - as the show seems to mostly build upon our current tech levels, and rarely makes leaps of technology magic (the cellphones are an obvious exception).

I do feel they glossing over the whole - time it takes to get places though. even at 1 G, the minimum time to get to Mars from earth is 3 days, yet the show seems to make that happen in mere hours of store time, yet - they talk about the time delay in receiving signals from one to the other.

      Meh - it's SciFi.

It took about 5 episodes into the first season to grab my attention. It held it since, so if your grabbed now, it will continue.

I have a few issues with all of SciFi, especially around communications. I love it when space travel takes months to go "small" distances but they are able to have full real-time hologram conference calls across galaxies. Its TV, so I get over it. LOL

I pay Hulu $12.99/m for the no ads version - sadly, I still get an occasional ad, but it's on only like 2 of the shows I watch there, definitely not the majority.

That means it is not a no ads version by definition.....

Hulu doesn't have an ad free version at all as far as I recall.

I know. That is why I don’t pay for their service.

I don’t pay to watch ads.

      Exactly..

Unlike @RojoLoco, I don’t mind ads on services in general. But I won’t pay for a service and then still be forced to deal with ads.

I really wonder how true this is?

I think most networks have ads for their own shows if not for more traditional product based ads. This is something I find annoying about Amazon Prime - the ad for some other damned show on their service.

Which frankly doesn't make sense to me. The only possible explanation I can come up with is - they need to keep you interested in new content to more likely ensure that you will stay a customer.

But you can skip Amazon Prime's ads as they are just tack on's to the video you're about to watch. Unlike with Youtube where you're forced to watch the entire ad or wait that 5 seconds before you can skip.

I have no idea what you two are discussing here. I only rarely watch Amazon PrimeTV, but I’ve not seen a prepended ad to a movie.

I've been watching Stargate Universe on Amazon Prime - and when watching on the Amazon Fire stick - it almost always shows an ad for some show before every episode. fucking annoying!

I watched several episodes on my laptop the other day, and noticed - no ads there.

I've been watching a few more shows on Prime (Just got done with all four season of The Expanse) and the only ad's that I have seen are for their own Prime originals. Those are ad's I can understand. Plus, I can always forward through them so not a big deal.

Agreed - it's only for Amazon's own shows that I'm getting ads - but really - I don't want any fraking ads!

But as previously mentioned - I've been denied so frequently in the past - I am assuming that I internally assumed you couldn't forward past them, so I've likely never tried, otherwise I'd be doing exactly that - and will now be trying that...

I get not having any ads if a person is paying for a service and that is why I have never been a fan of Hulu. It seem one has to pay out the butt to have no ads. Never seemed to provide enough value for me.

I will be pissed, like you, if Netflix starts putting ads out there.
I give Amazon a pass as they are mostly for Amazon Originals and also since Prime Video is just an add-on service to being an Amazon Prime member.

I dont see many Ads on Amazon Prime.. I cant remember seeing one during a show... after the show, yes, But that's at the very end when the episode is over.. but not ever during the show.

I have not seen any during or even after (just goes to next episode in 5 seconds during the credits). Interesting you have seen ads. I will watch for that now.

It's generally pre-roll at the beginning of a binge session. I haven't seen it on Fire TV or Roku TV, but I have seen it on my phone and tablet.

I see the pre-rolls. I only view it on my Roku.

For a paid video service, no, that is not acceptable.

But as I do not actually pay for Prime Video, it is a benefit of my Prime for shipping, etc. Then it falls into a gray area.

LOL - you say you're paying for prime shipping - the next guy says he's paying for prime video and getting the shipping as a side benefit.. 😉

Yup, that is why it is a gray area.

I don't have issue with up or side selling. It could be considered "product placement" vs an ad.

      Still a big grey area.
