I did notice that in the article on slashdot, so I suspect it is ready for "prime time"

RE: SAMIT: IBM Is Killing Off CentOS
@gotwf Nope, been using Debian since the mid 90's, only really appreciating it in the last 10 years. rarely
have I been disappointed. Usually my error, or hubris. I use it for small smb's and served me very well. as the saying
goes "Debian, been very good to me" ( said with an accent for affect) -
Ryzen 5 cpu
Is everyone seeing shortages of the ryzen 5 3400G cpu's ? Up here ( north of the 49th), there hasn't been any stock
in months. Curious if anyone has any insight on the supply chain. -
terminal emulation
I have forgotten what terminal emulation to use for this situation. I am trying to run lsblk on a proxmox host,
I can make out what the results are, however in a remote ssh session some of the characters are ???????I don't remember, but there is one emulation that will display properly.

RE: Adding remote storage to Proxmox
I use cifs, as I have a samba server with loads of space, just another option.

RE: SAMIT: IBM Is Killing Off CentOS
@scottalanmiller no, the end of the open source, specifically the GUI (web mail) for users.
thanks for your comments, now I have to go and re-arrange my prejudices

RE: SAMIT: IBM Is Killing Off CentOS
@scottalanmiller so basically, it has turned into a trust issue, based upon their previous behaviour. I am trying to
decide which distribution to use, as I need to build a new zimbra server( yes, I am aware of Zimbra's announcement going forward), I have almost 2 years to come up with a solution, but in the meantime..... I have an aversion to Ubuntu, but that is
based upon an experience I had a few years ago. I do like Debian, as for most of my deployments, I don't need 'bleeding edge". Any Suggestions ? -
RE: SAMIT: IBM Is Killing Off CentOS
@scottalanmiller Does Red Hat's announcement of Feb. 1/2021 change anybodies opinion ?

RE: Raid 10 + wd red (cmr not smr)
the next thought is a faulty miniSAS SFF-8087 to 4x SATA cable but why would the WD gold drive work ?
-
RE: Raid 10 + wd red (cmr not smr)
@Dashrender clearly stated earlier in the thread, 'raid controller firmware is current'
this is from the both drives, (alleged failed drive & new drive) after attaching to external usb device on the same server, using "parted"

RE: Raid 10 + wd red (cmr not smr)
@DustinB3403 I have my doubts about that with this controller. I have used a variety of LSI/3ware controllers
over the years, and have never experienced that, in fact have attached previously used formatted hard drives sans issue. nonetheless, the hard drive was new (straight out of the bag). I will test with
another lsi raid controller and see, thanks -
RE: Raid 10 + wd red (cmr not smr)
@Pete-S as mentioned earlier in this thread, attached to a windows pc, and performs as one would expect.
even ran some of Western Digital's tools (data life guard) on the drive, no issues. -
RE: Raid 10 + wd red (cmr not smr)
@scottalanmiller I thought so, i thought I would add that bit about the controller. I couldn't find
any firmware available at all on the wd site. the new drive shows a date of 01 Nov. 2020
I have another lsi 9750 4i , so I may put that in another pc and see if I get the same result. -
RE: Raid 10 + wd red (cmr not smr)
@scottalanmiller I did attach the drive to a windows machine, and was recognized immediately.
The raid card 9750 is up to date as well, with the latest firmware -
RE: Raid 10 + wd red (cmr not smr)
interesting old drive model # WD40EFRX new/replacement drive# WD40EFRX
hmmm. and the other drives in the array are all WD40EFRX

Raid 10 + wd red (cmr not smr)
I have a raid 10 backup sever, and one of the 4tb drives died ( allegedly). So i replaced it
with anew 4 tb wd red ( as stated in the subject a cmr not the smr drive). The raid card, LSI 9750 8i
did not see/recognize it. I doubled checked everything , power cable sata cable etc. no go. I had a 4 tb wd gold
drive, that I have and put it in. No problem, the rebuild resumed as I would expect.
any ideas ? -
RE: raid controller batteries
@travisdh1 thanks, I was able to find a replacement, with module. less than $20, so I figure it is worth
the gamble. From a previous entry , the battery is Li-ion, not LI-polymer. The official documentation from LSI confirms it.
as happenstance would have it, just noticed this on twitter today, re li-polymer batteriesthanks everybody for your comments.

RE: raid controller batteries
@gjacobse really, I am surprised. I thought ( incorrectly ) the raid controller batteries were not anything special. I think I replaced
some Dell perc card batteries a couple of years ago and the price was reasonable ( in my mind). Is this particular battery type li-poly,
something worth the extra expense ?
