    • That one user!!

Ugh, Here we are again late into tax season and a certain vendors software is slow and giving the user issues. No one else is affected, but this one user. The same user every year.

I'm at a loss on how to resolve this issue. For the past three years we've dealt with ticket after ticket for these same issues that no one but the user can recreate. The software vendor has no clue and once Tax season is over it all clears up or no one cares anymore.

Of course it's not the 10 Chrome tabs, the entire Office suite open, Multiple years of QuickBooks and every accounting packed installed open that's causing the problem. We've asked them to limit their applications to only those needed to finish the task at hand, we've replaced the computer, we've installed more memory, SSD's, and video cards but the issue is still there.

If only we could replace the user. I bet that would clear the problems up.

    • Double Inverted Pyramid

I found one. I was asked to take a look at a network recently and not only did I find a the infamous Inverted Pyramid. I found two of them!

Yes, identical SAN's but no replication or snapshots between the two of them. Im looking forward to what else I'll find.

    • Office 365 Shared Activation Issues

We have a client with a small 2 session host Azure RDS deployment. Everything is fine except for O365. Their users are being asked to activate Office at least once a week. This deployment will grow and we are concerned about this becoming a large burden. We have used the shared deployment method and would be okay with once a month globally but weekly is ridiculous.

We thought about purchasing Volume licensing for these users but it seems like over kill for them to be licensed twice.

Any suggestions. Anyone else a a similar deployment?

    • SQL Virtulization

We ran across a server at a new clients that was installed in the last 6 months to host their MS Dynamics install. The system was installed as a physical server with 3 RAID 10's consisting of 4 drives each. The 3 array's are broken up for the DB, Logs, and Backup.

We want to conver the server to a VM and configure a large RAID 10 with all 12 drives. When doing this is it still necessary to have 3 VHDX's if they are going to be on the same array?

Why are vendors still installing on physical systems?

      Talk about mission creep.

      Creepy mission?

Well for what most consider a top networking company developing wearables seems a bit odd.

    • SIP Trunk Delivery Question

We usually purchase a our DID's trough a provider like Flowroute and send the SIP traffic to a separate public IP on our internet connection and route it to our 3cx server from there. We have a site where a decent internet connection wasn't available so the ISP is going to give us a SIP trunk that is delivered via a T1.

The provider will put in an adtran as their CPE and then is planning on giving us an internal 192 based IP to attach to our IP PBX. Our IP PBX is 3cx and will run as VM on HyperV 2012. We planed to do a external non shared NIC for the SIP connection and a External managed by the host NIC for the PBX. Will this work? Or is the fact they are giving us a non routable out of their CPE just causing my brain to lock up. It's seems foreign to get a 192 address for a service, I was expecting a routable public IP.

      @Jason

I don't don't doubt that and running 2 to 3 years of QuickBooks at the same time doesn't help. The Tax software in question is also a intuit product so there is another strike.

I would be perfectly ok with continuing to try and find the problem if the user was some what willing to help but all we get is push back that they don;t have time to let us resolve the problem. I seriously her husband who is in IT had her do something to the PC.

So without a UTM device how are you monitoring the network and locking down the traffic?

      1. What is the actual need here? A firewall already monitors and locks down the traffic. Those are not UTM functions.
      2. With a UTM, how are you doing it?

I look at UTM's as a single device that can easily secure and monitor and a variety of network traffic with minimal effort. Running a regular ERX works but you lose the malware, mail filtering and IPS features of a UTM. Sure there are other methods of gaining those features back but not on a single box. For SMB that single box is a big sell.

If you use a Edge router how are you adding back in the other security features that a UTM or Nextgen firewall offers?

    • Viewing switch topology

Is there a third party app that will display switch layout and whats connected to each port similar to what Meraki does? If not what are you using to pull the snmp or CDP data from the switches.

We have a lnetwork that we are trying to work through and it would be nice to visualize what's there.

The majority of the switches are Cisco SG-300's

    • 2.5" or 3.5" drives

We are getting ready to build backup server based on a R720 should we look for 2.5" chassis or 3.5" chassis?

I'm thinking the density of the 2.5" chassis would be beneficial for future expansion.

    • SG300 GBIC

We have a couple of Cisco SG300's that we will connecting to our main network via fiber. There is a 500 foot run and a 800 foot run of single mode that we will need GBIC's for. It looks like there are a couple of gigabit Single mode modules available. Any suggestions on which ones we should use?

Yes, I see no reason to leave Azure.

If we can find out what DC it's in we will fire up the new VM in that DC as well.
