I Love MangoLassi - What Can I Do?
As community members we all want to see our community succeed and grow. As the community grows the more value is has for all of us â the network effect in action! As community members, you may wonder how you can make a difference, what can you do to support the community. Well, I have put together a little guide for you.
-
Post: It's that easy. Nothing helps the community more than you just coming here and getting involved. Whether it is asking a question, answering a question, starting a discussion, sharing the news, participating in a discussion; your activity promotes the community. It adds to the conversation, it increases activity and it gives everyone else more to ask, answer, discuss, etc. Surprisingly, asking questions is one of the most important aspects and the one that most people are the most shy about. Don't be shy, ask away. Everyone is here to help.

Avatars: Head over to Gravatar.com and get your avatar set up. Seems like a simple step, but those avatars make the site look complete, improve user interactions, make people naturally more friendly and amiable because it makes people seem more ârealâ and makes it far easier to remember who is who. A small thing, but a valuable one.
-
Tags: Thoughtful tagging of your topics does far more than people realize for the community. Tags are how topics and groups are handled and identified in MangoLassi. Add the âWindowsâ tag and your thread is part of the âWindows Group.â The tags are very important because they determine the contents of the RSS feeds, are sometimes the only view of the site that people have and they show people how much activity that there is on a given topic. Moderators attempt to add tags whenever possible and to clean them up as much as possible, but if everyone participated in tagging their own posts the tags would be more complete and accurate.
-
Original Content: If you have ever wanted to write guides, reviews, scripts or how tos⌠go for it. That content is highly valuable and creates great reasons for more people to visit the community and get to know all of us. It's also a great way to set yourself apart and make a name for yourself. It's the kind of content that you can reference on a resume!
-
Share: Whether it is linking to discussions or articles, Tweeting, posting to Facebook, LinkedIn or whatever the more that you show people on the outside that you are in the community, the more that they will learn about it and come check it out. Whether it brings in people directly, just increases mind share or improves the chance search engine recommendations, sharing helps a lot.

Invite Your Friends!: Hard to beat this one. Know anyone that works in IT? Any students looking to find a place to network and learn? People who might have questions to ask? Vendors looking for a place to talk to potential customers? Open source projects needing a way to engage people? Other IT Pros looking to network, bounce ideas or see what people are talking about? Tell them about MangoLassi, invite them to come take a look.
-
Get Involved Locally: Local or regional Mango Meetups are a great way to create buzz, create content, get people excited and introduce them to the community.
-
MangoCon: Of course, coming out to the big MangoCon event is going to be an awesome way to engage each other in person, strengthen relationships.

RE: Home business ideas for transition out of 9-5?
@IRJ said in Home business ideas for transition out of 9-5?:
PC Repair is dead. You may find the well off client that has a $2k machine once in awhile, but when you can get a PC for $200-300 new or a tablet for $40-100 you are virtually eliminating that market.
You should certainly work for a MSP before even considering starting one. You have no clue what they go through with client acquisition, quoting, businesses that don't want to pay, etc.
For every hour of billable work there is at least 2 up to 100 to gain a client, keep a client, get paid by a client etc. I have had a client take me up to 2 years of developing a relationship before landing them as a client. Then it takes 5 hours at least to get a solid contract written for them (we have a basic template but every client is different and is treated as such). Then you have your account administration duties, I call this the Toddler Whys? Then you have the billing (which you know that onsite you did last week how many hours was that? how far did I drive, what parts did I buy? UGH why didn't I write this down when I did it?) yeah that. Then you have the notes that SHOULD be done for all the work you did. We say that takes a minimum of 15 minutes per item. Oh now that has to be re-written for the client so they can understand it. Oh now you have to do the Toddler Whys again about your email. Then you have the bill: Why did you charge me for explaining the email you sent? What do you mean I get charged for all communication?
So where are you storing all that documentation for your client? Oh you are being cheap and using your own desktop? Awesome! OH now the hard drive died? Where's all the documentation? Seriously IT people sometimes try to cut corners too much and then spend too much time trying to redo the things they yell at clients for. There is always your own infrastructure to deal with.
Not to scare but this is the honest truth. No matter how organized you are or how much you promise yourself you will stay organized or get there if you are now it never really happens.

Veeam Endpoint Backup FREE
As many of you know (and if you don't where have you been) I am currently in Las Vegas attending VeeamOn 2014. I have learned a lot and gotten to meet some great people. However at lunch yesterday I was given this little tidbit of information but told I couldn't say anything till 12:01 am so here is their official press release!
**Veeam Announces Veeam Endpoint Backup FREE,
Extending Protection to Desktops and Laptops **Stand-Alone Solution Enables Users to Back Up Windows-Based Laptops and Desktops to an Internal or External Hard Drive, NAS Share or a Veeam Backup Repository
VeeamON â Las Vegas, NV: October 8, 2014: Veeam Software, the innovative provider of solutions that deliver Availability for the Modern Data Center, today announced Veeam Endpoint Backup FREE, a simple and free standalone solution that enables users to back up Windows-based laptops and desktops to an internal or external hard drive, a NAS (network attached storage) share or a Veeam backup repository.
Veeam has a history of providing stand-alone free tools to the IT community that will solve real challenges, beginning with FastSCP, Veeamâs very first product, originally released in October 2006. Veeam Endpoint Backup FREE joins the companyâs wide portfolio of free tools used by over 500,000 IT professionals, which include: Veeam Backup Free Edition, Veeam ONE Free Edition, and Veeam Task Manager for Hyper-V.
âWith Veeam Endpoint Backup FREE, IT professionals now have a simple solution for backing up endpoints, which has long been a major data protection headache,â said Ratmir Timashev, CEO of Veeam. âVeeam believes that modern data centers should be fully virtualized, but we also recognize that unlike servers, endpoints will always remain physical, and they need to be backed up as well. Plus, if the IT organization still has a few physical servers left in their data center, Veeam Endpoint Backup FREE can help fill that gap.â
When recovering, IT professionals can perform a bare-metal restore to the same or different hardware, a volume-level restore, or a file-level restore. The tool will be freely available to all, and will not require the use of any additional Veeam products; but will integrate with Veeam Backup & Replication if one is present in the environment. In this case granular or full application recovery capabilities made possible by Veeam Explorers for Microsoft Exchange, SharePoint, SQP and Active Directory are also available.
âMost vendors would charge quite a bit for a tool with this level of functionality, so the fact that it is free could significantly disrupts this segment of the data protection market,â said Dave Simpson, senior analyst at 451 Research. âItâs not a full blown move into the physical data protection space by Veeam, but it does provide a good option for those Veeam customers who have virtualized all but a few servers within their data center.â
Veeam Endpoint Backup FREE will become available in early 2015. For more information, please visit http://go.veeam.com/endpoint.

GroveSocial ML Ownership
GroveSocial would like to thank the community for their support as we have launched and gotten our feet under us. We know that we still need lots of work, and we have been working with the NodeBB team to move things along as quickly as smoothly as possible as we both launch our own services and they launch their social media platform.
We have kept our ownership quiet to try to determine how best to approach that subject. However, after a recent event we realized that you all just want to know who we are! GroveSocial is a Social Media company â we are all about being social, building communities, bringing people together, supplying platforms for communications, building brands and building relationships. In the case of ML, we wanted to give IT proâs a neutral place to help each other that wasnât attached to any specific hardware or software or to any specific vendor. We also wanted to give a place for IT pros, service providers, students and vendors to meet, interact and grow together. We believe that the conversation is the market and that the more people who are involved, the better that that conversation can be.
To that end GroveSocial decided to launch MangoLassi as a wholly owned âshowcaseâ community to demonstrate our abilities around social media. We intend to launch several showcase communities of our own in addition to supplying online community platforms and moderation capabilities to customers looking for us to build custom communities. But MangoLassi is and always will be free from aligned with any specific vendor. The value of this community is in its neutrality and that will always be maintained.
As part of this, GroveSocial and MangoLassiâs owner is - wait for itâŚ. Minion Queen, aka Danielle Ralston!

Looking for Highshool IT Intern
NTG is looking for an intern. Our most recent has graduated from Intern to junior level PBX Engineer so he is no longer available for some of the testing we would like to do.
The intern would need to work around 20 hours a month in our LAB. We will have various tasks laid out for them they will need to work through them and figure things out by using the ML community as their resource.
Probably we are looking for someone between the ages of 13-15. Older is okay.
Edited to add first step:
Step one for a prospective intern: Sign up for account here on ML and post in this thread why they are interested in IT. -
New Ads
I am thrilled to point out to everyone not fully awake yet, we have some more ads that are popping up around here!
I know some of you have noticed the Fluke ads. They will also be doing an AMA sometime soon.
Today we just added an AetherStore ad.
I know that some of you find ads annoying but this is how we keep the site running fast and smooth for you all. With ads come a better running site. Make sure you give some of our advertisers some love!
