I think my issue was that in my environment, I already had Office 2010 installed. For some reason a wmic command to uninstall Office 2010 wouldn't work, but this tool does.

A strong American cultural value is their love of their cars, which is tied to their love of freedom. I noticed this living abroad. I saw public transportation working so well in other countries, but when you talk to people in the States about it the conversation will often drift towards "well what if I want to leave work early and the rest of the car pool doesn't?" That kind of stuff. With that said, I'm one of those people that really enjoys cars.

I'm also in the camp that thinks that the government can't do anything better for less cost than the private sector. So I would be in favor of letting private companies compete in cities. I was really disappointed with Austin TX when I went down their for Spiceworld. I used AirBNB for the first time and was looking forward to Uber and found out they were kicked out of the city for the city's own system.

I used a lawyer to from mine about 4 years ago. I know some people have said to do it yourself, but this is a lot like IT. You might be able to do it yourself, but

      a. isn't your time better spent on your main business,

      b. do you recommend that people learn how to do complicated IT stuff for a one time project or hire a pro that does hundreds of them a year?

But, I thought it was the general consensus here to not ever use Access if possible, use other more enterprise tools like mySQL and something for a front end?

The development cost would never be worth it. No matter what @scottalanmiller says.

I hate Access with a passion. I firmly believe it needs to die in a fire along with Faxing.

That said Base or Access are the absolute right tool for this job.

They have Access already installed and I'm willing to install Base on each computer just for this. I should probably add this is just a legacy system that is read only, so it's not going to grow and use over time will decline.

I had to share. I couldn't believe it when I read it. I'm glad no one was hurt, but you just have to wonder.

They didn't see that coming? "Hey boss, What should I do with all these batteries that spontaneously explode?" "uh, put them in a pile over there inside our factory."

True. I mean atypical in the sense that the extra time it takes me to do this, isn't of great consequence to me (from @Mike-Davis 's comment).

I get where you're at. For me I was doing side work when my day job slowed down to 32 hours a week. Looking back at first I tried to do my own web site. I don't have a creative bone in my body and at a certain point, I realized every hour I spent on the site was just making it suck slightly less. I would have been much better off putting my time in to other things.

On the legal side, you set up the LLC to protect yourself legally. If you ever did have an issue, would you call up a lawer at zoomlegal to defend you? Would you call up a local lawyer that would look at your cookie cutter LLC and say this is worthless because of this technicality? I wasn't comfortable with the first option so I went with a local lawyer.

I will say this for zoom legal: Doing a dry run seeing what questions they ask you helps you minimize the time you spend with a local lawyer, which in turn saves money - so there is some benefit to starting down that path.

    • digital forensics / expert witness

I had a lawyer that is a client of mine ask me about being an expert witness. He has a client that says he sent a message on facebook and then deleted it. He thought he could use the "Download a copy" of your Facebook data feature, but I don't think that's going to work because on this page, it says:

      https://www.facebook.com/help/405183566203254
Messages Messages you’ve sent and received on Facebook. Note, if you've deleted a message it won't be included in your download as it has been deleted from your account.

In addition to that, I don't have any experience in criminal justice and things like "chain of custody." Can someone recommend a company that has experience in this area? This would be in the Auburn, NY area.

There are also the anti big brother users that don't want people to know when they come in/leave/are idle...
In Lync 2010 I had an on prem server and Lync started at logon, and autosigned in. I still had users that would click settings and exit as soon as it launched. At that point, it became a HR issue.

    • RE: Moving from full time to part time, what can I automate?

@magroover Thanks for being humble enough to share your story.

@guyinpv I left a W2 job over a year ago, but it was a process that took 3 years. I'm glad it took that long. There is a lot I had to learn - and I'm still learning. Having been through the process, I would recommend a few things.

      • read the book "Quitter" and some of the others by Jon Acuff

      • meet with a mentor from score.org

      • define your new business. "getting whatever work you can find" is a bad approach. You need to have an elevator pitch. You need be able to tell people what you do and why they should hire you.

Some costs are variable, but there are many fixed costs such as health care that you have to be able to pay each month. That's covered in the Quitter book. I would suggest reading the book "Miserly Moms" as well. She outlines all the fixed costs like health care and your mortgage and then looks at variable costs like your grocery bill and suggests how save money on those expenses. At the prices you're talking about, things are going be very lean.

Your original request was for tools to automate monitoring and management of systems. Solarwinds has this - for a price. Even if you choose something like building your own Zabbix server, it still costs money to host the thing.

Thanks. I saw that and then saw posts like this one that are more recent and seem to conflict:

So then I then I went to the website and downloaded the datasheet and couldn't find the feature listed:
      https://dl.ubnt.com/datasheets/unifi/UniFi_Switch_US-24_US-48_DS.pdf

I should have checked out the EdgeSwitch....

    • RE: Billing Hour Segments

@eddiejennings yes. Of course there are different ways of doing this. There is even on hybrid of managed vs break fix that is the prepaid block of hours classification. The next up is the managed contract that has covered items and non covered items. Typically what you see here is remote is covered and on site is additional billable. The premier offering is the AYCE (All you can eat) plan.

Some companies break out their plans by a bronze, silver, and gold offering. They do things like patching is covered, but application support is not at the bronze level and at the gold plan even the office 365 licenses are covered.

For us issues like this are usually that of the ISP, so it's usually on the user to contact their ISP. Some are willing to fix it, some aren't.

In my experience, if you don't have a smoking gun, like logs or a bad tracert, you don't get very far. And with good reason. Imagine all the Surface users that have called in about their internet connection. 😉
