    • Regional/Language/Date - GPO

I have a DC running Server2012 and then a domain joined Terminal Server (2012) which is used simply to deploy Excel as a remote app.

Our users open Remote Excel from their local computers.
The problem I have is the date/region format is set to US and I'd like it to be UK.

Ive changed the settings on the server to reflect this but when users use Excel it still shows the US version.
I then logged onto the server as a user and noticed it was set to US and when changed to UK, his Excel worked with correct format.

I dont want to have to change this for each user individually so want to do it using a GPO if possible.

On our DC, I have tried this way: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc754020.aspx with no luck.

Can you guys help me deploy a Group Policy that will set all remote users time/date/region format to UK settings?

      Thanks in advance

    • Data Protection and sending data...

I have been asked for help by a client (who themselves were asked) to write a response to discuss how they comply fully with the Data Protection Act 1998 in terms of all categories of information they hold. They want to specifically address the process of how they would transfer personal data between their organisation and their end customers.

They have been asked to provide details of any recognised Information Security Standards certification that they currently hold and/or include copies of any relevant internal policies that they think would demonstrate their case.

Has anyone ever been asked to write a paragraph about this? I wondered if anyone could share thoughts on replies....

FYI: All data is stored locally in their office, with computers password protected, patched and running latest virus definitions. Encrypted backups are taken each night and email solution is with Office 365 with each user having their own passwords.
I'd expect any personal or confidential files would be password protected (possibly Zipped with password too) and transferred via email - Is this the kind of answer I should be giving?

      Thoughts appreciated.

    • Thoughts on EdgeMax Pro 8

I'm setting up a new network with 6 individual offices within a single shared office space.
I was thinking of using the EdgeMax pro by Ubiquiti as it was recommended on here. Each office will have it's own subnet range:

      192.168.1.1
      192.168.2.1
      192.168.3.1 and so forth.

Do you guys think the PRO8 as per here would be a good choice?

I havent used one before so will it be straight forward to configure via the Gui?
We will need to configure site to site vpn's, firewall rules and bandwidth control etc.

      Thoughts on this appreciated.

    • Cloud Provider...what to use

I'd like to start using more cloud services for hosting server applications.
AWS / AZURE/ DigitalOcean / Rackspace - These are the ones i'm weighing up.

My first project will be to host UniFi wireless AP's on a cloud controller. It's pretty simple enough as i understand but im finding the hard part picking what Service provider to use.

The second project I aim to do is use a server for a Backup repository which will need to be backed up and replicated so I can offer new backup facility to clients - thinking of using Veeam If anyone has experience with this, please let me know (I hear Azure have a Veeam Connect dedicated application)...I'll probably start a new thread about this in good time..But first to decide whats the best provider to use.

Note: I'm UK based so having data centre this side of the pool is preferred.

    • BSA Declairing your software license compliance

So a client received a letter today asking them to declare their software license compliance by going to www.bsa.country/uk/declaration and entering their BSA ID.

The letter states its not mandatory but failure to manage software assets and misplaced confidence by management can result in legal, financial and other consequences.

Is this a hoax or is this something the client should do? Has anyone seen this before?

And please note: We dont have any illegal software running as far as I know so should be good to do it but have never seen before so wasnt sure whether to ignore or comply.

    • Microsoft CSP + The transition and newsletter/email to customers

Need to make the transition over to CSP and will need to let clients know that we'd like to manage their subscription and handle billing for them moving forwards.

I wondered if anyone had this transition before - is it a simple process and does anyone have a template/newsletter I could possibly use to word it well?

      Thanks in advance.

    • Backing up Office 365 mailboxes

What does everyone use to backup client O365 mailboxes and content?
This is something I dont yet do for our clients and feel a bit unnervey about not doing so. Therefore wanted to implement a backup/business continuity for Office 365 mailboxes.

      Any recommendations?

    • RDS - RemoteApp hangs

We have a server2012 r2 instance deployed as a RDS of which Excel is deployed as a remote app.

Occasionally and probably more often than not, some users (some more than others) keep having an issue when they try to launch the Excel. The app connects and just hangs...See image here: remotestuck.JPG

I have to then log onto the server as an admin, and manually log out/disconnect their session. They can then log back in as normal until the next time it happens.....Any ideas what this can be?

    • Tracking user steps on files

I've been asked if its possible to view a log of file changes. eg. logs of when and who opens/reads/deletes/copies files within a folder on the server.

Is this possible perhaps via event viewer or other?
We have a single File Server with Domain Controller. All users authenticate to the server so wanted to know if there is some way we can monitor or check who has accessed what etc.

      Thoughts appreciated.

    • Workflow management/check list

      Wonder if anyone can help...
We have a client in the insurance sector who are very strict about their workflow...however they are currently using sharepoint online through 365 and is a bit clunky and are massively exceeding their library limitations (they dont want to go down the onpremise solution). Therefore does anyone else have any client in this sector and know of and can recommend a good workflow management system.

As is stands, they need to give pricing/quotes quickly and often files/folders are re-saved multiple times and has to go through a series of check points to then be given cost to client...They want to find a solution where they can monitor / track the process of data to see where it's at in regards to creating, modifying, producing and sharing quotes and other documentation.

      Any ideas?

    • Hosted Data Solution

      Hi Team

Wondering what everyone uses for a hosted data solution? We've used Dropbox, Sync, Box, SharePoint, SugarSync over the years and with cloud ever evolving and more and more solutions available I was curious to see what others used as a primary cloud hosted data storage solution.

More specifically, we've just started working with a client (who are just 4 users). They currently have a temp PC acting as their file server. We want to get rid of this and possibly look at utilising a NAS box for its replacement and perhaps sync with a hosted data solution, or otherwise simply use a cloud based solution.

Its a small family run business and there is nothing to hide there - no permissions on folders and everything is open to all.

The downside to Dropbox and similar solutions is that we'd need to download & sync their 200GB to each computer including 1 external user. I'd like to avoid doing that if possible due to lack of disk space and ideally simply have a mapped drive linking to a hosted solution ie Azure data storage or similar but just wondered what everyone else tends to do for small cloud hosted solutions. We do have compliance regs also to consider ie. data must be stored in UK which also rules out Dropbox and similar solutions.

What do you use to map drives linked to cloud storage which can be used anywhere/anytime and has redundancy? Thoughts welcomed.

    • Powershell on Startup + Azure Storage

      Hi Team
So I have a client using Azure File storage. In short, they have a mapped drive (S:) which is a mapped to a small Azure file storage repository.

Annoyingly when the computer is rebooted (sometimes) or goes to sleep, when they log in, the S drive has disappeared (despite persist in the script). Can anyone let me know either a) how to keep the mapped drive there always and forever, or b) how to set the powershell script to run on login automatically (as an admin). If you need any more details, please let me know. thanks, J

    • Giving out admin details

      Hi All

      Q: what would you do?

We have a client who want to install software (a number of them) for testing on a computer but cant because they dont know the admin password which we need to make changes. (UAC)

I have explained we dont give this out as policy due to security vulnerabilities and of course to prevent users making changes we dont necessarily want them to etc. We advised that we would happily install any apps they want if they give us the list and we'd roll them out.

Then then came back to say they understand but can we not create another local admin user for them to use....
Now - this is besides the point and makes no sense as allows them to do something we dont want to do!

      What would you do?
