This is a tough one. The law is confusing and chances are you won't get caught, but I agree that your best option is to check with the vendor and see what they offer an online solution. I would guess that midway through 2016 most vendors do offer a solution. If they don't offer a solution you have two options.

Find another vendor who offers similar content in an online delivery method Copy the DVD to your network and you'll probably be ok.

      Obviously option 1 is better.

Problem is that is repaying for it all. That could be $100,000 per site easily. These 4-30min DVDs cost any where from $500 - $3,000 a pop. Not that we wouldn't spend that but if we can copy them to a legally Laptop vs $100,000 we will do that.

Well, according to Scott's argument that the DVD itself then becomes the backup, and the in use image is the copy on the laptop - I'd say you're probably OK - other than of course the Library of Congress' feeling of the week, wither or not it's legal or not to break the encryption.. lol

And it's not common, so you pretty much HAVE to say "System AND Network Admin" to make it clear that it is a 50/50 role.

Yeah the only reason I am is because I know both, and when you have issues that cross over both sometimes it can be hard for people that only know one to work together to fix the issue.

@thwr 7 days isn't actually that hard to meet with if your a Fortune 500 who properly tracks your licensing. If you don't then you need to ask for extra time (Which even Microsoft and Oracle will give you) and assistance (VMware has licensing optimization scripts that can be run even outside of audits to make sure your in compliance).

Do you just install Office on computers, and Windows and create Windows SQL servers without tracking your usage vs. licensing or do you just use BSD licensed software?

I'm in public EDU. We're running quite a bunch of MS products like SQL Server, SharePoint, Forefront UAG, System Center and others. I have a very exhaustive stack of paper about where we use what since when - and it's driving me nuts. It's very hard to keep track, especially in case of upgrades. Try to keep track of a machine upgraded since XP. Very funny.

That's why I am replacing quite a few things with FOSS alternatives wherever possible.

How can you changes a users Notes password from Domino Administrator? The internet password isn't the same as the notes password it seems.

Sadly they don't have to be the same - Do you have access to the Domino admin software? It more or less like RSAT for Windows.

Yeah it's on the server with the notes server.

From inside the console, you should be able to find the user and reset the password - it's been something like 10 years since I've done it, so I can't get any more specific than that I'm afraid.

ICANN has rules about that stuff.. Granted who gave ICANN power in the first place?

      wasn't it the US Government?

Yes, ICANN and IANA (slightly older with a different history) were created to remove responsibility from the US Department of Defense and make them "independent," this was in 1997/8, and despite this "independence," the US military still has a lot of control, for example in 2003 they essentially took over Iraq's TLD upon invasion, for some reason.

I'm not sure what you're saying here. Just because the DOD gave it up, doesn't mean that the US Gov't still isn't the one who put ICANN in power, in fact it sounds exactly like that is what was done. Of course the DOD (from the sounds of it) has kept a thumb on the table so they can do what they want when they want - your example of Iraq.

I'm saying what I said, they were supposed to be independent, but they're not. It's clear the military still does pull some strings, but that's not how they present the situation and that's what I was saying, it's why I put independent in quotes.

Dealing with A Small Orange scams right now. They have a racket going where they send invoices to old accounts, claim accounts were not cancelled years later, but have the accounts deactivated so that you cannot log in, you can't even do a password reset. But they claim that they cannot cancel the account (which didn't even exist) without us giving them a credit card and setting up the account again! Nice racket. If you go to their website and go to "Contact Us", that's exclusively for customers. So if you have an account issue, screw you.

So their system is designed around slamming. They fake an account, and then claim you don't have authorization to cancel it. Very convenient.

I've noticed odd behavior like this before - or what I considered odd behavior - the Outlook shortcut for example. If you pin it before Outlook fully launches the screen, but instead do it while in the Outlook profile setup, you get weird results.

Assuming that the icon on the taskbar is the embodiment of the EXE, I'm not surprised that that is what is pined instead of your PS script. I'm guessing you're going to have to manually create a Pinned object to the launcher, not after it has executed and quits, leaving the actual exe running.

I grew up mowing the lawn on the farm and at my grandmother's place down the road. About eleven acres of lawn between the two. As an adult, I don't let there be any situation where I have to mow the lawn.

My dad, on the other hand, bought an $11K lawn mower and does it as his relaxation.

Apropos is yet another new thing @scottalanmiller takes for granted I've never heard of before. Looks much more efficient than using find just to look for a program that doesn't happen to be in $PATH!

LOL it was taught for first time computer users when they took "intro to your computer lab" one hour course at college in 1994. Not an admin tool, just a general user tool on UNIX systems.

My Intro to UNIX course never mentioned it I don't think. Learned a lot more in a couple of 1 week training sessions at SGI than 2 years of college... not that anyone is going to be surprised by that.

It was taught to the kids who were learning how to use UNIX for word processing and email back in the day.
