A further consideration is that two of my four licenses will be DCs. Upgrading them from 2012 R2 to 2016 is an unknown at this point.
What makes them unknown?
I don't know anyone that has upgraded a 2012 R2 DC to 2016.
You don't... Do not upgrad Domain Controllers. Replace them.

RE: Vmware Audit
Luckily the log files from all the Vshpehere hosts will cover us. We have to give them the past 2 years of logs. The store in vcenter. And we had to get to decommissioned ones powered on to get the logs off of them. Now watch vmware try to say we needed licesnses for the decomed ones since we didn't uninstall vsphere just had them unracked and stacked in storage.

SAN Lun Sizes
Since They are only a software layer separation what's the point of having multiple? rather than a large one? Vmware says you should limit each lun to 2TB and no more than 15 VMs for the best performance? How is it better performance when LUNs are separated on the disks?

RE: Worth-while remote system administration tools - Preferably Open Source
@DustinB3403 said in Worth-while remote system administration tools - Preferably Open Source:
So we are now taking over the maintenance for a remote office, as the vendor we have is super expensive and not performing nearly as well as was hoped.
With this a few issues come to light:
- The remote systems are in Spanish - not my strongest language
- The remote systems are at varied degrees of updates etc
- Accessing the systems is difficult at times (remote access)
Looking for some ideas to try and simplify the management / maintenance of these systems.
ThanksHire an IT person who knows both languages. That's what we do.

Prezip the contents with password protection and then transport it anyway you want.
That's not secure at all..

The only digital downloads I aware of are the VLSC licenses.
Otherwise the trial download might let you enter a real key and activate. I'm pretty sure it will. You would want to stand up a trial and then be force to scrap it if you decides to keep it, bit I suppose stranger things have happened.
Eval can be activated, even with MAK keys (and at any time you wish)
Eval can be converted to accept VL keys. It will not activate on one natively.
Edit: I thought I posted here when I did it, but i cannot find it
Maybe I'm missing something, but I had no issues using VL keys on "vanilla" eval installations since Win7/2008R2.
The GUI won't accept the key. You have to use DISM to set the product edition since eval is not a regular one. And the you can use DISM to activate the key.

IMO it should have just had a ARM based chip already in it. not require people to get a raspberry pi for it.

BTW this type of fiber is sometimes called Dark Fiber.
I used to refer to the fiber between our two buildings that we own completely as dark fiber, and I was filleted on SpiceWorks for it.
Fiber you own isn't normally dark fiber. Dark fiber is the extra strands ISPs aren't using.

RE: Sophos or WebRoot Cloud Endpoint Advanced - Any Thoughts???
@wrx7m said in Sophos or WebRoot Cloud Endpoint Advanced - Any Thoughts???:
I hope their (Sophos') endpoint software is better managed than their UTM software has been this past year. Several updates have broken some pretty important things. I have 4 pending updates because I don't see a resolution to some of the items. One update fixes something, then breaks 2 more things. The next update doesn't even address some of the issues that were broken by previous updates.
I had a cheap subscription to webroot for my personal desktop and am looking for another "sale". I installed sophos free endpoint on my parent's pcs and they haven't been having any related issues or malware infections.
Can't even compare the two. UTMs suck. And sophos UTMs is not a true sophos product. It's astaro

I guess it depends what your time is worth if you want to try to script something.
Scripting isn't about trying to save money. Doing the script cost way more in time than what that thing costs. Scripts are way more flexible than a program. You can add more variables and even pass off arguments to other systems.

I built it on my lab to play with it, and it works, just not sure on the use cases in reality
Use case is pretty much any shop that needs AD but has not existing Windows dependency.
You can still use it for Servers with windows desktops. Eliminates the need for server licenses and CALs. You can still do GroupPolicy as well. I've set it up for a few non-profits before.

RE: Surface Pro 3: Boot from USB
Configure your Surface to start from a USB device
Once your USB drive is set up as a bootable drive with an appropriate operating system on it, you’ll need to set up your Surface to boot from this drive. This requires you to make changes in the UEFI. Here’s how to configure the boot order on Surface so the USB drive is the first option.
For info on using the UEFI on your Surface, see How do I use the BIOS/UEFI?
To make changes in the UEFI:
Step 1: Shut down your Surface.
Step 2: Once Surface has turned off, press and hold the volume-up button.
Step 3: With the volume-up button held down, press and release the power button.
Step 4: Continue holding the volume-up button until the Surface logo no longer appears on the screen.
You should now see the Surface UEFI. Do one of the following:Surface Pro 3 and Surface 3: Go to Step 5 below.
Surface Pro 1 and Surface Pro 2: Skip to Step 9 below.
Surface Pro 3 and Surface 3:
Step 5: Select Configure Alternate System Boot Order.
Step 6: Do one of the following:
Surface Pro 3: Select USB > SSD
Surface 3: Select Network > USB > SSD.
Step 7: Select Exit Setup.
Step 8: Select Yes to save the configuration and restart Surface.
Surface Pro 1 and Surface Pro 2 (optional for Surface Pro 3)
Step 9: Select Secure Boot Control.
Step 10: Select Disable. This will allow Surface to search for an alternate device to boot from aside from your SSD.
Note
This may affect the look of your Surface splash screen.
Step 11: Select Exit Setup.
Step 12: Select Yes to save the configuration and restart Surface. -

RE: What do you think of Faction?
I don't like the look of the website. Space is poorly used and badly designed. Navigation frame just looks weird like it's some 1990's Front Page website.
I didn't look a ton at the content because the design is bad, but what I saw was very little actual information and all marketing terms.
