would free/truenas run AS a vm in hyper-v?

trying to keep myself busy, it's quieter than a cemetery at midnight atm

The general consensus that I've seen here is

      • a NAS OS is redundant and hampers efforts to repair things.
      • You're better off using something like Fedora, CentOS, Ubuntu Server, or your favourite flavour

so do you mean, just build up another server consisting of an OS that support staff are familiar with, fill it with disk and use that?

Yep, that's been the consensus around here. No real value add in having an appliance manage SAMBA and/or NFS for you. If you really really want a GUI interface, use a RedHat distribution for cockpit.

I haven't tried Cockpit in a while, but I don't believe you could manage shares there last I tried. Do you know if that's changed?

You can manage storage but not shares.

Neth, using Cockpit, allows for share management.

    • VM Hardware Version script to upgrade?

I'm adjusting the vmware hardware version, something similar to:

      ([VMware.VimAutomation.ViCore.Types.V1.VM.VMVersion]::v10)

What was the script that you used to do a bunch of these, without a reboot, and do you have information on the current vicore type version id for 7.0U1?

5G: Using drones to beam signals from the stratosphere

Plans to beam 5G signals to the public via drones that stay airborne for nine days at a time have been announced by two UK firms.
They want to use antenna-equipped aircraft powered by hydrogen to deliver high-speed connectivity to wide areas. Stratospheric Platforms and Cambridge Consultants say they could cover the whole of the UK with about 60 drones. But telecoms analysts question whether the economic case for this scheme is quite as simple as it sounds. The Cambridge-based companies say they would run the service in partnership with existing mobile operators. They are already backed by Deutsche Telekom, which hopes to trial the technology in rural southern Germany in 2024.

Are they dirigibles? I hope they're dirigibles.

Sadly, the only reason anyone cared was because it was the governor - if not for that, this would have sat on some sgt's desk for 3 years before being lost.

Our little puppy, Clive, was finally big enough to sleep in the bed last night. He's still tiny, but big enough to not get rolled over on now. He's a much happier dog today now that he had snuggles all night.

How dare you post about a puppy and not put up photos!

I'm sure there's been at least one or ten in the thread in the last 3 or 4 months, lol.

I don't remember what kind of dog Clive is, but I hope he gets big and/or smart enough to be a good protector of the family!

Clive isn't even that old. That was Lula, our 12 year old Boston Terrier that needed adoption. She's been adopted twice, but both times failed. Looking for a home for her. She's so sweet and affectionate, but can't handle kids or other dogs - so really needs like a senior couple with their own house.

My wife and I keep thinking we want a dog, but neither of us wants the responsibility of the upkeep, just like kids. No one [in this house] has time for that. Too busy with important things like an afternoon nap.

What are the "musts" for a MS SQL VM and a MS Exchange VM on the same Hyper-V Server Host?
      Or is it a "No...No".

More of a "when wouldn't you?" Only time you'd not have them on the same host is when you are short on resources. In an SMB, I've never seen where you wouldn't put them on the same host. Even in the Fortune 100, they are often on the same host.

Exactly. It's more about utilization. If it's a 2950 running those two things for a 5000 user company, then you're fucked.

iPhone 12: Apple makes jump to 5G

Apple has confirmed its iPhone 12 handsets will be its first to work on faster 5G networks.
The company has also extended the range to include a new "Mini" model that has a smaller 5.4in screen. The US firm bucked a wider industry downturn by increasing its handset sales over the past year. But some experts say the new features give Apple its best opportunity for growth since 2014, when it revamped its line-up with the iPhone 6. "5G will bring a new level of performance for downloads and uploads, higher quality video-streaming, more responsive gaming, real-time interactivity and so much more," said chief executive Tim Cook. There has also been a cosmetic refresh this time round, with the sides of the devices getting sharper, flatter edges. The higher-end iPhone 12 Pro models also get bigger screens than before. However, for the first time none of the devices will be bundled with headphones or a charger. "Tim Cook [has] the stage set for a super-cycle 5G product release," commented Dan Ives, an analyst at Wedbush Securities.

Looks like they are copying the OnePlus, bug lagging behind.

Apple has been lagging on innovation since they started on phones. Even ipads were just a reskin of a tablet presented in 2000.
