@thecreativeone91 Ditto, though I recall one particular intel chipset (945? low end P4 skt468/775) that would consistently barf when this was attempted.
We were just informed that the Fiber Bundle cut was in Western KY. The outages have been reported in the Nashville, Chattanooga and Knoxville areas in Tennessee. Outages are also reported in Huntsville, AL, and Lexington and Louisville, KY. In Nashville, the Metro Nashville Police Department and the Nashville Fire Department are without internet service.
I rant that over in my mind, and it seemed that if the reboot failed, you would not get any type of email.
If the reboot failed to run completely (like the system was down, cron had crashed, things were frozen) you would get no email either. You are making the system report on itself with is not good.
That's why the system should reboot itself (no way around that) but the monitoring of whether it is up or not should be done externally.
can you justify having a 15foot network cable, router/VPN as well?
Why would you need any of that. Make sure your computer's firewall is on. And use known sites with HTTPS and you'd be fine.
I agree. It's not a realistic concern for most activities. I really don't care if people can see me browsing 9gag or whatever that is not SSL and HTTPS is a VPN already, so if a VPN is going to protect you, you already have one.
