I have been a BOINC user since 1998; started using seti@home my freshman year using an old compaq laptop with win95 on it. I now run 3 projects on my home network, seti@home, milkway@home, and Atlas@home, they run on my main pc (4930k and 32gb ram, amd r9 290) as well as an amd hexcore system that is much slower.

Ive only used it in an office environment once, at my last job when we got some new killer (at the time)hardware. Loaded up boinc/seti on dual proc dell server with 256GB ram, for 'testing' to make sure it could run at full load for periods of time. It was also fun to see how many work units it could do. My boss said 1 day was enough, so i uninstalled it.
These distributed computing tasks dont use much bandwidth, but they will run your cpu at max, and some of them eat up RAM (Atlas@home is one). There are settings to control all that.
However, running these on work systems is using company resources for personal stuff, unless your boss is huge into distributed computing and science and wants spare cpu cycles spent that way(havent met one yet that does),

Well, you can thank people using Apple's term for IEEE1394. The real name is just IEEE1394. Calling it FireWire or i.Link is the issue. Just call it by its real name and it gets much clearer 🙂

Fonts should never come as an .exe - if they do run away.

They come as native font files, you then install them based on the OS, either Mac or Windows does this easily

In this case, it was a matter of the settings during the restore.

Under GENERAL you had to select your source and destination as normal. Destination was changed so that it was the new History file. Under FILES you updated the DB and LOG files to reflect the new DB, otherwise you would over write the originals.

This is where they borked it. They didn't mention FILES only going to OPTIONS, and there is where they mentioned updating the file names. The main discovery was that you need to uncheck LEAVE Source database in the restoring state.

When I emailed them about removing the 'borked' databases I had created the called me back. I mentioned it to the fellow and we had a short discussion on the matter where he took notes and agreed that the directions were incorrect. When I got to the part about unchecking LEAVE Source database in the restoring state he mentioned that he uncheck Take tail-log backup before restore

Exactly my experience, but I will add that the more complicated the product is the lower it's chances of working properly. It's a sliding scale from "meh, yeah, ok" to "possessed by demons" to "complete and utter failure to chooch"

At a former job we bought a serial to USB from them for a PLC once... never again. It did funky things and inserted random characters into programs. We returned it for a replacement... the second one didn't work at all.

Yea,.. there is a lot of fakers that just won't work on those FTI drivers... ugh.

The driver has a verification software in the download you can check the chip with though.. in Windows 7 the fake ones would still work I believe.

Normally neither. They are normally persistent until a certain amount of time, then they tear down when idle. Might be hours or days. That way they don't remain absolutely forever, but normally a very long time.

This is just for their web API. Not directly related to calls.

Don't ask me.. it's what he told me - so I just walked away and really didn't put any more thought into it.

But his thought was that you can't acquire the AP over wireless.

He has a greenfield setup.

But in thinking more about it... he's going to have to plug into the network no matter what for at least the first AP. After that he should be fine all wireless.

Again the user seems to have lost the external monitors.

It seems that it is a permissions issue, thought it should not be. For a test, will add to the local admin and test. Unless there is a different option (sorry, getting rid of the Surface is not an option).
