Now integrating the PBX with SalesForce is a great idea, and can let it do lookups for CallerID or even cause the salesforce appmto issue a pop up or some such.

As I've done some research today, I believe this is the kind of thing they want -- specifically a popup with information about an incoming call.

Definitely would seem to be a PBX feature, not a endpoint device feature. A softphone is pretty much a desk phone just inside your computer via software only. I wouldn't expect a dumb phone on my desk to have this ability, but I would expect my PBX to maybe be able to accommodate this.

The only other option would be is if SalesForce is the PBX, but then, there's still a PBX involved.

I was a professional guitarist (classical) and trombonist (ensemble and jazz) at one point. It was great and I loved it, but it took so much of my time. While I enjoy it a lot, I don't enjoy it more than my career stuff. But one pays the bills and one does not, so it is an important trade off. Once upon a time I played guitar to pay the bills and had to play over six hours a day. Was fun, but that's why I have carpal tunnel now.

This seems like a possible solution using time conditions. It would involve User 5, the floating user, to log in and out of the appropriate queue. Would also require configuring two queues and three ring groups, rather than one queue, and one ring group. On the positive side (for the users), Users 1-4, wouldn't have to do anything.

That is a decent flow with only a single user interaction needed.

You can program a BLF for each queue on that users phone to log in and out of the queue, so they will have positive visual confirmation that they are in the queue or not.

      *451111*2222
      Where 1111 = Queue# and 2222 = Ext#

I was testing this today. In order for me to get it to work, I had to make 1111 the extension number and 2222 the queue number.

Maybe I typed it backwards? I did not log into a system to verify that.

FFS what are you doing helping people 😛

Jared's FreePBX words are so authoritative, I honestly though I must've had a config problem causing me to have to use his command backwards. 😄

Yeah, I wonder where I was responding from that day.

Because I just took a whole 60 seconds to SSH into a PBX and check..

      [root@bpbx tftpboot]# grep *45 * 001565593cfd.cfg:linekey.13.value = *455153*5151 001565593e05.cfg:linekey.13.value = *455155*5151 0015655949b5.cfg:linekey.13.value = *455152*5151 00156572df55.cfg:linekey.13.value = *455154*5151 001565944ab7.cfg:linekey.13.value = *455153*5151

Also have you tested your ping to to NJ/NY data center for VULTR? Might surprise you.

I was surprised and ended up moving some things from Chicago to NJ/NY despite it being twice the distance from me as Chicago VULTR instances were (500 miles to Chicago, 1200 miles to NJ/NY). Latency went from 80/90ms to 30ms or less on average when I moved to NJ/NY Vultr instance.

Seems odd you'd have the least secure systems on the domain, the client computers... and not have the most secure systems on the domain, the servers. With your DC and hypervisor being on the domain, how many times have those been compromised? Do you not update your servers? Do they all have internet access

To my knowledge they haven't been. No. All servers receive Windows updates. Yes.

And I agree, this is odd. This, and so many other things, are being fixed one bite at a time.

Set your firewall to drop outbound traffic from servers that don't need Internet access. Point those servers to a local WSUS server for updates. Allow the WSUS server to get out to Internet. You can set local policy and point servers to WSUS, if they aren't domain joined. That way, servers can be updated but lower attack vector as they cannot get online.

How do you secure this for truly mobile use (crazy guy is allowed to demand the use of a physical phone from anywhere)?

Ideally, crazy long passwords, and better with TLS on the SIP channel. You can go further with port knocking and similar. VPN is an option. But good passwords go a long way, and adding TLS goes really far.

You don't hotdesk with secure creds though because you cannot trust users type all of that in. That is why it is a bad idea for this scenario.

The best option is simply to use secure credentials like always and just allow the extension to authenticate from more than one device.

This requires training the users to push their ext button before dialing out when using the shared phone in the office.

This will likely be the way I'll handle the folks who come into the office once per week. This project is the perfect opportunity to introduce new behavior.

@Dashrender Right now, there is no security outside of extension number and passcode. Out-of-office users, simply have their phones configured to talk to our on-premises server and they login using their extension's credentials. Everything's in the clear.

Hence your toll fraud. I can log on to any of those extensions from anywhere.

      Don"t use USB disks.

If you want a USB disk that can be removed, use a NAS with a USB port that can replicate data in a certain folder to the USB.

Or use a NAS with Starwind VTL so that you get the behaviour of tapes. And the protection of RAID.

I'm going to have to look at that

      It's a cool product.

@EddieJennings I don't know about the third, but if you start a hosting trial at freepbxhosting.com you get the first two free. Even if you then mode your install to Vultr it seems the licenses follow you for free.

They call us toll-free. During that toll-free call, they use the compromised extension to make a long-distance call.

I use pretty much all lowercase and hyphens or underscores. I'm too lazy to escape spaces and a lot of times too lazy to hold shift to get the underscore.

So when they are ready to make their software production-ready, it will be the other way around.

Exactly. Like if they ONLY supported VMware or ONLY supported Hyper-V or ONLY supported Windows we'd understand. Those are all potential production ways to run software. But a physical deployment? This means that they've never tested and don't support ANY production environment.

There is a big gap between having "one tested environment for production" and "not tested or supported for production."

Exact same reason we dropped FogBugz. They only supported non-production platforms.
