    • RE: I can't even

8 minutes into a call where the person who had the problem isn't available and the receptionist is trying to explain the problem with their server not being on the network.... "So is the server good now?"

I explained that I just got on the phone and haven't even had a chance to do much yet.

      "Oh of course, I understand"

2 minutes later... "Is the server good now?"

      I can't even.... Geeze

@dbeato Yes, but they move the clock back 10 minutes, clock in, and then they move it back to the real time.

The backend should be the one setting the time when saving to the db. Why accept the time from the clients if it could easily be modified like this.

Yes, the program is supposed to pull the server time but is not doing that for some reason. I am working on that angle as well.

Apparently Ninja doesn't control that, so it must have been Windows update defaults.

Wow, check it and see if you can apply a GPO to not allow for that.

As soon as the fire is out... I'll have to take a look.

    • Bitlocker Issues

Getting this error when trying to use bitlocker on a PC. The PC is a bit older and doesn't have a TPM, but I have went into GPEdit and turned on the require additional authentication at startup.

I've done this on several PC's and it's worked fine except for this PC... Not sure what to make of it.

"BitLocker could not be enabled. the BitLocker encryption key cannot be obtained from the startup key or recovery password. verify that you have the correct startup key or recovery password and try again. 😄 was not encrypted)"

I have tried using a USB as the authentication and also tried with a password to be entered at startup.

@LilAng - I have never seen a resume with someone's religion. That is weird.

      Common in places like Utah.

Yep! We have clients ask us (on occasion) if we are LDS.

My answer is always that we help anyone and don't discuss religion or politics.

      Prejudiced against non-muslims?

Religion is stated in our national ID, so its something we are custom to place as standard info. It is not prejudice, it is just how things here are.

In your ID you have name/ national ID/ your moms name/ nationality/ place of issue/ religion, so we simply copy the info to the CV/resume.

It will take us some time to figure out hiring without background check, since the country uses it, like why would you put religion in your ID

Wow... From my standpoint that's nuts. People should be hired on their ability to do the work and knowing things that aren't related (Like religion) is improper in my viewpoint. Which country is this @Emad-R ?

    • CTRL-ALT-END in Fedora 28

I remote into a lot of PC's with Screenconnect.

The PC's I remote into (the remote computer) then also remote into other computers using Microsoft RDP.

Usually a CTRL-ALT-END works just fine on a PC but on Fedora it seems to be a command to shut off the PC.

Any alternatives? (Except going back to my beloved and missed Windows machine?)

@brianwinkelmann said in Troubleshooting Hard Drives - CompTIA A+ 220-1001 Prof Messer:

Very interesting, I remember I've heard that sometimes to fix a hard drive that is damaged you can put it inside of a freezer with bags of course and it can be fixed, is that true or is a myth or a lie? Sorry about foolish question. xD

Not a foolish question Brian. We have some customers who have done it. The drives (other than the brand new high capacity helium drives) are not air tight. They have a filter. So moisture can get it and start to corrode the platters.

If it has been in the freezer, we have to charge extra as it has to be cleaned with a special cleaning solvent that is about $400-500 per gallon.

Also it can cause a drive that may have been a logical or a physical non invasive recovery instantly into a clean room job (the most expensive option). So it's best to do nothing to fix it. Bring it to a quality data recovery company (like mine!) and they will have the best chance of recovering the data.

    • Fedora 28 Server - Linux 101 - How do you partition your drives

I'm very new with Linux, so feel free to over explain.

I am setting up Fedora 28 server and see that the auto partition feature doesn't seem to do a great job.

Is anyone aware of a good walk through on how best to manually partition?

I am setting up the box as a test box, but ultimately it's use would be to run KVM for a couple of virtual machines.

Hopefully this isn't too general of a question.

@scottalanmiller "there is no backup API or CBT on KVM" these are big items to not have out of the gate.

So being forced to used a 3rd party appliance (even if it were Veeam or UrBackup) would me more that needs to be managed.

That's lack of feature alone makes me question if KVM is production ready and would remove it from my shortlist for 2018.

      Youtube Video – [09:27..]

@scottalanmiller is the person who suggested I should use KVM... But if you have an agent based backup it doesn't really matter.

Agent based totally matters for people like you that have no idea what they are doing.

It matters even for people like Scott because of the many reasons that @StorageNinja listed in the last 24 hours. Scott just refuses to listen to reason when it comes to his current favorite shiny thing.

I'll let Scott respond to that.

Yes, I don't have any idea of what I am doing. That's why this is a LAB environment, so that I can learn. Even if I don't go with it for production, the worst that can happen is I learn more about linux.

    • Desktop photo for all PC's in the domain

I am looking to deploy a desktop photo to all the PC's in a domain.

I have been able to do this but want the ability to change the photo easily and have it auto deploy again.

I made the file name info.jpg and created the group policy. It deploys once but when I replace info.jpg with a file with the exact same name but different text on the photo it's not updating.

Does Windows cache this on the local computers? If so, is there a way to either turn off that caching or force it to reapply the new image at startup?

In past versions of Server Essentials Microsoft has mandated (AFAIK) that you have to run it as a domain controller. Server 2019 Essentials is a much different setup and doesn't push you to setup a domain controller.

Is it still a requirement in 2019 Essentials or can it now just be left as a workgroup?

@CCWTech Even with only 4 users, wouldn't that mean create 4 user accounts on the server and then manage 4 user accounts on 4 machines. I supposed you could use the net user command in screen connect, but setting up a domain is so easy. Does the connector for Essentials work when they are not domain joined, or does it domain join them when you run it?

In the environment each user is transient, users move around the office and use whatever computer is available to them. So really a need for only 1 user unless we need to lock down certain directories for managers, owners, etc.

However no need to put complexity where the need does not exist. Creating 4 users (or more) is very easy. Once created not really any need to change them often.
