@scottalanmiller said in DNS names for intranet sites?:

Doing short names, like just https://portal/ is a problem because it implies you are only functional on the LAN and not from other locations. Few companies want to design their naming system in that way today.

Got it! But how do they want to design it?

I'm thinking especially if you have a mixed OS environment and using a number of hosts that resides locally or in the cloud or at different company locations over a VPN network.

I have a hard time wrapping my head around how to set things up with hostnames, FQDNs, DNS on the *nix side and WINS, DNS, AD on the other side.

For admin stuff, most devs uses mysql workbench its 28 MB and has alot of functionality.

@pete-s said in Need a web GUI interface to MySQL:

If it doesn't have to be web based you could use MySQL Workbench - which I think is more capable than the web GUIs.

      Overkill and slow.

It's not overkill if you're a DBA or developer.
And if you're smart you install it on the machine you do admin from and not on each server.
And you did ask for the best...

    • DNS names for intranet sites?

What is the recommended practice when naming intranet sites?

In the past you could name something "portal" and if you entered that in the web browser it would find "portal" in your local DNS and go straight to the site. Today web browsers go straight to the search engine unless you have a .com or other top level domain at the end. You have to prefix the url with http:// for it to work the way you want.

I've seen people use .local but I've heard that is not recommended because local is not a top level domain.

I've also seen people use the subdomain of a company domain, for instance firewall1.company.net. It just not a short name for this.

What is best practice on this?

How about when you want to virtualize the AD?

Xen still crippled until xcp-ng will be declared stable by the community.

How could xcp-ng not be stable when it's the same source code as xenserver 7.4?
      That makes no sense.

    • RE: Quickbooks Enterprise on Linux

It seems like Quickbook is using Sybase so I don't see a problem there. Samba share will work the same as a share on a Windows server so no problem there either.

And it looks like Intuit started supporting linux already in 2007, so there shouldn't be much problem there either.

    • RE: Advantages of CentOS or Fedora over Debian?

Looking at CentOS / RHEL they seem they use a very old kernel 3.10, even in the latest release, which itself was released recently.

How does that work with hardware support? Do Red Hat backport all new hardware support from the newer kernels to 3.10? If you for instance are setting up a new server with AMD Epyc CPUs, you'll need support for this in the kernel.

But that is for people that want to be PBX people.

Yeah I mainly just want something simple and stable at this point

I'll put in a vote for 3CX then.

Easy to use, professional looking do-it-all web GUI. Very easy to install, good user forum. Free license for small installations.

We run it on a linux VM and it has been working great. 3CX also have good client software for Windows/Mac/Android/iOS that integrates well with the PBX. Otherwise we use Yealink phones.

Here is the page where you find the linux stuff:

    • Advantages of CentOS or Fedora over Debian?

I usually use Debian for servers and it's been a long time since I tried anything else.

When using community supported distros for servers it seems like many favor CentOS and Fedora and I thinking maybe I'm missing out.

For those that are familiar with both, what advantage do CentOS or Fedora have over Debian?

    • RE: Website to Android APK ?

      @emad-r

But its ghost shipped software, so we are left to come up with solutions.

Wont android APK allocate more RAM, there gotta be setting.

I don't think allocate more RAM is going to make a difference.

If you can't change the software on the server, your only option is to speed up the client.
Either you need to replace the hardware or use other software.

Start by trying using some other browser. They might be more suitable to your application.
      Here are some to try:

      Hello guys,

Nice to be here! I work primarily with industrial IT.

First real network I worked with was Novell Netware in the 80's. Today it's a mixture of proprietary systems, linux, freebsd and windows.

Hope to learn more about everything, especially new technology and solutions.

    • RE: Website to Android APK ?

If it's slow in Android it's probably slow on every slow device there is. The problem isn't Android, it's the website.

Lots of inefficient javascript, lots of css and verbose html increases the amount of RAM and CPU the browser has to use to show the webpage. You will get away with it on a PC but not a slower device. It's a frontend problem.

@scottalanmiller said in Seeking an AMD AM4 MicroATX Mobo That Supports Dual HDMI Output:

Well I ordered from Cybertron after doing way too much research to make sure it would meet my needs and guess what, the parts were switched from what was listed and it's useless.

THAT is why you whitebox, because you actually can guarantee what you are getting. Wondering about wasting my time? I spent a load of time ensuring the non-whitebox was correct. I could have built a white box in less labour time AND not waited several days to do it and I just built it myself which takes all of 30 minutes.

      +1 on that.

When we order servers we have them built with our components of choice from a Supermicro reseller. So we don't get an unknown Dell mixed use SSD, we get Samsung SM893 or whatever we want. When customers wants Dell or HP and there are special considerations for the hardware it takes a lot more time to find a combination that will get the job done.

I dont believe i have either installed on the client side

      https://chocolatey.org/packages/openssh

Better to use a port scanner, for instance nmap for windows. https://nmap.org/download.html

I would use Nmap on my system, but for troubleshooting a client machine I'd rather use something lighter and faster. YMMV

Yes, but installing the complete openssh server on windows isn't light weight.
For telnet and ssh client it's better to just run putty.exe in that case.
      https://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/latest.html

Putty used to have less than helpful error messages. It looks like that has changed since the last time I used it. Either way, I'm done arguing with you.

Sorry, didn't mean to start an argument for the sake of arguments. You brought up a good point which is to test with telnet which I appreciate.

Guy on site is running window updates, apparently this pc has never been updated. He has control right now. Letting him do his thing.

/me puts on a dang helmet. Good luck!

Well, lets check back in a couple of hours. Actually windows will reset some settings when you install some updates.

      Sounds like a plan.

Some of the next steps to troubleshoot are:

      • open the share on the back office server from the back office server itself (this eliminates the network outside the machine)
      • if above doesn't work check that the "File and Printer sharing from Microsoft Networks"-setting is enabled on the LAN interface properties.
      • install and run a portscanner from one terminal to see that the ports are actually open over the network.
