I have a friend who works in IT and actually has a degree that might be a good candidate. She lives in Texas and currently works in the field but could definitely benefit from some much higher end experience. However, she's 25. Thoughts?

Get her to post here and start a discussion!

I have reached out to her and at this point it's in her hands...

Getting people to be interested enough to voluntarily follow up is one of the toughest stages.

She already has a full-time job and another part-time, like most of the millennials I know. So she's pretty busy already. But hoping she'll post here.

No interns? There is way less interest in this post than there should be. For all of the people that I see talking about how few opportunities there are, you'd think someone would be interested when things come up.

Sadly, I think most of us on the site don't match the age requirements they are looking for. I know I would totally love to intern for ntg, the wealth of knowledge one would get from the experience is a self-learners dream.

I don't know any high school age kids well enough to recommend anything.

I know a few, but none that have an interest in computers. It's funny, I swear that when talking to one group of people you would be led to believe that nearly everyone works in IT today. Then talking to other groups, you can't find a kid interested in IT anywhere. Where do we all come from, there is no one else out there looking for these career options, it seems?

Just as important as an IT intern that would do lab projects, a design intern is also high on the list.

You could find so many kids interesting in this at a local LAN center. I wish I knew someone to recommend.

Vidya games. That's what got me building my first PC when I was 12

They have those things still? I've never seen one in Upstate NY and the last one I saw anywhere was in Scranton like a decade ago. That's not a thing in this area, that's for sure.

That's a long way away, and a big city to only have two! And do people interested in computers use those these days... or just people who don't have Internet access at home. Like Internet cafes were for the high tech people twenty years ago, but for the poor and homeless today.

Pretty much. It was fun to go to them in college and play in a LAN environment. But the per hour cost was a lot compared to just having your own computer and Steam.

yeah, and I think that most viable candidates will have their own computers.

It's amazing how rarely people looking to built their careers are really that interested in them.

With the week I've been having I might be interested... How much does it pay? Can I work remotely? Do I have to interface with any Microsoft software?

Actually, on a more serious note, I've got a friend that is thinking about leaving the insurance industry to pursue IT. Is this something that might be open to people pursuing IT as a career alternative? If so I might point him in this direction to see if he is interested. He's already started following along with Scott's book on Linux Administration to try and get the basics down, so he has some familiarity with the ML community (I think).
