Not always about the certifications and or "brand" of worker.

Hi,
New here, thanks to Scott !
Used to be an avid user of Spiceworks, that might change.
I see a lot of people really pushing for Certs or a "kind" of person but I think a lot of companies are missing the trick.
Sure, you could be waiting a long time to employ that guy/girl who has all the skills for x wage, but what if they never come, your business could suffer? and even if you employ them, they could not be suited or cause too much friction in the business.
Sometimes it's better to use your judgment accordingly and give some people a go, based on their attitude, how they come across in the meeting and willingness to learn?
so many jobs ask for VCP/MCSE/ITIL/Dell/HP and many other accreditations and whilst some people have it, someone just as good could be round the corner, that could be up to speed in X amount of time, at a fraction of the price at the start and could exceed expectations.
Of course, you have to be smart, put clauses in contract and add a longer probation period, including if they leave before X they need to pay costs, but that is understood in other industries such as pilots......... Some have 4-6 year tie in periods and too right as the training is very expensive.
This is just a general statement from me, just think more people should be given a chance unless something really specialised is required
Apologies for the boring first post .......
Thanks,
G.

Welcome to the community. And great to have another Aussie, or an honorary one at least, to help keep the "overnight" shift humming along. You will find that you are in good company here, lots of people are generally posting here during your day time hours.

Welcome!

Awesome!!
Just need to figure out the layout of the site, very different. Sure it won't take long.
Interesting approach, I like it
South Australia is colder than I was hoping..
Thanks All.

How cold is it?

It's 11 Degrees at the moment, but this house is not well insulated, too much open space.
Already caught a Melbourne Funnel Web..... I think it got in through the massive gap in one of the doors to the outside.
I am liking this forum, it even beeps when someone has replied!

Most people don't like the beeps.

11 degrees?!? You are colder than New York in Spring. That's crazy.
-
The weather here fluctuates a lot, can be sunny then raining.
Beeps are good if you are not in an office I guess........ (lucky me at the moment)

It is a very new platform so things change all of the time. Lots of churn in the interface because it is running on a beta code base but it is super fast and lightweight gear. The site architecture is done with the intention of running regional databases and application servers too so, if all goes well, there will be European and Australian servers providing content lightning fast for those regions.

@scottalanmiller cool.
I will do some research and get up to speed.
Is it a big community actually managing this project?
I'm a bit upset I did not hear about this before, at least I am here.
It is very light weight, I can see that from the coding, I like the font (I am a bit funny about fonts) very legible.

@Gabi MangoLassi is only 2-3 months old. Very recent. The community is not huge, it is still in an initial bootstrapping phase but the response has been really good and people are joining regularly and participation is really good. Every new, dedicated, active participant that we have join really makes a big difference. The network effect is starting to catch on. The community is still primarily built through word of mouth - so let people know about it. Reach out to IT Pros that you know and tell them to come check it out. And if you know vendors or MSPs, tell them too - the more the merrier.
One of the neat things about ML is that vendors are more than welcome to come and participate. It's a great platform for potential and current customers to engage with vendors and vendor partners in a conversational, social way. A great way to make connections, maintain relationships, learn about new vendors, etc. Being free for vendors to promote their wares makes it very unique and very welcoming - no one is trying to determine if you are or are not a vendor or out to make money. So you can feel welcome, rather than feeling like you are skulking.

@Gabi I think a lot of people see all of Aus as a sunny, warm place.
They don't realise that for 1/3-1/2 of the year most of us happen to be perishingly cold too
Welcome by the way! -
Much like how everyone thinks that New York is a densely packed city and can't grasp that most of New York is either extremely low population farmland or mountainous wilderness without enough people to even have villages.
