Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR)

Is this acceptable to use? I want use RAID10, but with synology you can't add drives to a RAID10

NAS is for backups only.

It's just another term for RAID 6 (if setup correctly.) If done incorrectly, it's a horrific RAID trainwreck. Much like you will get with ReadyNAS FlexRAID or Drobo. RAID 6 at best, disaster at worst. So the question should be... is RAID 6 okay for your use case?

Growing a RAID 6 is the same as failing a disk in it, so you have to take that into consideration.

While this is true, the stated use case is backups.
I never recommend RAID10 be used for backups. If your backup process is being done correctly (3-2-1 or similar), then you can easily handle a failure in one of the backup stages. Rebuild it and move on.

Oh I agree, RAID 6 probably makes sense. It's growing RAID 6s that I often avoid (as I avoid growing RAID 10, too) but for backups, even that can be okay. But he needs to be aware of the situation.
