While I agree that compared to the experiences that Scott mentions that he has with healthcare in other countries the normal boring medical stuff - many other countries seem to be handling it possibly better. But what we don't know is they they handle the rough stuff - cancer, brain tumors, major organ transplants, etc.
Scott's also gone on to show that the US tax payer is already paying something pretty close to what Europeans pay in terms of taxes, which means for us to move to that system would raise our taxes to numbers quite a bit higher than Europe (potentially).
The US healthcare system is definitely mussed up! And we as a nation couldn't even consider doing healthcare nation wide unless we do it truly nation wide, and the states have nothing to do with it.
Another thing I'm curious about - say you live in France and travel it Italy, while you are there you break your leg. In the US that cost easily over $10K, possibly over $20K. Now if that person was at home in France it might be completely covered... but now that they are in Italy - what happens? Is it like a US traveler - they're boned and responsible for their own expenses? Granted the general idea is that medicine in EU is much lower - so the bill might be $2K instead of $10K...

I've been told by a few business owners that healthcare was an incentive similar to time off or salary. If we went to Universal Healthcare they wouldn't be able to hire people anymore. When I suggested offering more money and more time off they balked saying those aren't the same.

Also for years when I described to family in former Yugoslavia and also eastern Germany about how healthcare in America worked, they didn't believe me, nor did tons of people in Europe on IRC. They'd always say "well, what if you get cancer and can't pay for it?" I said "you die." Or "if you are in a car accident and it's not your fault, does it still cost you anything?" I then had to explain that yes, initially, and a hell of a lot, you may get some back from insurance, if the car driver didn't have insurance and suing them would do nothing, you're out all that money for something you had nothing to do with.
They still were pretty sceptical, and typically would go into "richest country in the world so it's hard to believe," well the roads are falling apart and people want to build a wall (something Eastern Europe once did, ironically). I actually have fairly far-right (non-racist) stances on most things, but healthcare is one of the few things that cannot function as an open market in most cases. No one is going to shop around for prices when they have a heart attack or are in a car accident.

There definitely are, but a lot of people from especially poor countries really do think America is paved with gold in a sense. Yes, the PR machine is that good, it's exceptional actually. A lot of it has to do with "if you make these economic/social concessions you can be like America too," of course these are things America doesn't actually do, and countries that try them end up going bankrupt. The best way to get more like America is to copy them, not listen to them.

As a mostly non union town, I have little to no experience in the whole union thing. And overall, I tend to agree that a single payer system would probably save a ton of money - you take the profit portion completely out of it.

What do you mean how they handle it? There is a reason people go to Spain, Germany, Mexico, and Japan to get major surgeries and cancer treatments. It costs less even out of pocket and generally, from the research I've done, the quality of care is much better.

American propaganda is amazingly effective. It was used internally in the 40's and 50's and then turned outward during and after the cold war.

I think the "lines" thing really is something which has overtly polluted the American discussion with universal healthcare policy. Plenty of insurance companies constantly reject transplants or expensive surgeries, but that's fine because there aren't any "lines," even though there are, and in many cases they are much longer, especially if you're in critical condition.

Healthcare still IS an incentive to employees. Still not required by law unless your company is of a certain size or larger. Heck, in my healthcare office, we have what I consider awesome coverage with an nearly unbelievable low high deductible - $2000 single, $4000 family. The monthly employee contributions are very reasonable too (reasonable in comparison to others in the US, not the world) $60/month single.
But then I hear people in my office whining because the hospital down the street gives it's employees 100% free healthcare (at their facility only) with no deductible - no clue on prescriptions.
But getting back to Coliver's comments - I'm not sure how he wouldn't be able to hire people anymore? You mean you wouldn't have an insurance bill, and that would somehow mean you couldn't hire people? why? You mean you employees would now be paying 10% more in taxes than they do today? So you'd have to pay them at least 10% more than you do today? So your medical insurance is less than 10% more than you pay employees today? seems unlikely.

When the ACA started I recall Papa John's claiming they wouldn't be able to pay for the healthcare because their overhead is too small, and then they also began giving away free large pizzas. It's selective memory and concern.
