One of the things I'm wondering - will my insurance company either deny my claim of $200 and instead require that I must have the testing center submit a claim because they are a contracted entity with my insurance company.
This would be akin to CDW registering a deal with HP so other vendors know that CDW is the reseller of record hopefully keeping CDW from getting screwed (as Scott would say).
So in my situation, since there is a contract between the testing center and my insurance company, if I want this spend to be applied to my deductable/reimbursement I might be forced to pay the higher price.

@Dashrender I don't know if you have kids, wife, etc but if your plan is like the other ones (have to pay $X before it kicks in) you may as well pay full pop and hit the limit so you can take better advantage of all the benefits

There's no garuntee they will pay like that where's if they file direct to insurance and are in network they have agreements and will fight over the costs until they figure something out. If you pay cash and your insurance doesn't like it they just want pay, no option for fighting it

The craziest thing is that most of the people complaining the most need universal healthcare the most instead. While I agree that compared to the experiences that Scott mentions that he has with healthcare in other countries the normal boring medical stuff - many other countries seem to be handling it possibly better. But what we don't know is they they handle the rough stuff - cancer, brain tumors, major organ transplants, etc.
Scott's also gone on to show that the US tax payer is already paying something pretty close to what Europeans pay in terms of taxes, which means for us to move to that system would raise our taxes to numbers quite a bit higher than Europe (potentially).
The US healthcare system is definitely mussed up! And we as a nation couldn't even consider doing healthcare nation wide unless we do it truly nation wide, and the states have nothing to do with it.
Another thing I'm curious about - say you live in France and travel it Italy, while you are there you break your leg. In the US that cost easily over $10K, possibly over $20K. Now if that person was at home in France it might be completely covered... but now that they are in Italy - what happens? Is it like a US traveler - they're boned and responsible for their own expenses? Granted the general idea is that medicine in EU is much lower - so the bill might be $2K instead of $10K...

Plenty of immigrants go to the US and are shocked that healthcare is so expensive and isn't covered and also many are shocked to see homeless people, really, there's even been cases of people calling the police to report a homeless person assuming that they're in need of help. Of course, they may need help, but nobody is going to give it.

I've been told by a few business owners that healthcare was an incentive similar to time off or salary. If we went to Universal Healthcare they wouldn't be able to hire people anymore. When I suggested offering more money and more time off they balked saying those aren't the same.

Are you saying there aren't homeless people in other countries? Why would America not have homeless people? Is our PR machine so good to as to make it seem like that's just not a thing here?

Also for years when I described to family in former Yugoslavia and also eastern Germany about how healthcare in America worked, they didn't believe me, nor did tons of people in Europe on IRC. They'd always say "well, what if you get cancer and can't pay for it?" I said "you die." Or "if you are in a car accident and it's not your fault, does it still cost you anything?" I then had to explain that yes, initially, and a hell of a lot, you may get some back from insurance, if the car driver didn't have insurance and suing them would do nothing, you're out all that money for something you had nothing to do with.
They still were pretty sceptical, and typically would go into "richest country in the world so it's hard to believe," well the roads are falling apart and people want to build a wall (something Eastern Europe once did, ironically). I actually have fairly far-right (non-racist) stances on most things, but healthcare is one of the few things that cannot function as an open market in most cases. No one is going to shop around for prices when they have a heart attack or are in a car accident.
