Check Printing Software

OK now I know why you're not bothering with your accounting software, because you're probably not tracking these individual payments via the accounting software - instead you put in a single lump payment to study participants, maintain the list of those participants elsewhere, then run you check printing operation.
But it seems like Word or Excel could do this with a printing template.
Right. We (I, I am the one who does the printing) just report to them how much was sent out for each study.
We get 250 people do the survey at $25 each, we print 250 $25 checks, and report that we sent out $6250 in incentives, and that is that.

Hmmm, something else I did not think of.
Set up a "mail merge" of sorts.

yep. I've never done it.. but mail merge is just built into Office (and I'm assuming LibreOffice) so it shouldn't be that hard.

My original program did all the data tracking inside Paradox, but there no reason that can't be separated out.
We send very few checks anymore (almost all survey work these days is done online, where they DO have direct deposit) so it wouldn't be that bad.
I could even use BASE instead of Paradox!

One thing you must be careful about is alignment. We work with a book keeping service that prints checks, and when it doesn't align correctly, they have to void the check or checks which has a cost to him and his customer.

What's the purpose of any database at all other than a CSV?

None, really.
I'll probably just use CALC.

Could this not be done with a VB macro in Excel?
-
We use a product name PrintBoss. It allows you to print onto blank check stock.
-
We use the reassuringly-named SecureCheck from AP Technology
Unfortunately that's not really my area of expertise so I can't comment on how good/bad/ugly it is. But I can say we have been using it for many moons, so it can't be that bad...
....that's how IT works, right?

Thanks!
That is going into my list of programs to take a look at.
