Make XP Open Source
-
The usual silly speculation is starting. Microsoft will never entertain this. It would be self defeating for them. Just silly to talk about.
-
They'd never do that because the code base would be embarrassing
-
It really would be. And it would start a whole market in revamped XP that would longer for forever.
-
Didn't someone try that with W98?

The only "someone" that can try that is Microsoft and it is really a do it do not situation. It's really hard to try to be open and fail. The moment you try, it is done.
DOS has never been opened. So no Windows built on it is by extension.

Yeah, not open source, but there was the Keep W98 alive campaign as well as the crazy customer I had 8 years ago who was buying my old parts for his "special W98" rig. He said something about he belonged to a "win98" club that allowed him to keep using his PC. He was weird.

No patches, no updates. Anyone can "just keep running" something outdated if they don't care about functionality, security and support.

yeah, he told me that the had people writing drivers and such. I was only half listening to his ramblings waiting to get paid for the parts I was going to throw away!

Drivers you can get, it's patches and fixes that you cannot.
