John Mcafee will crack shooter’s iPhone for free to get FBI off Apple’s back

That dude is insane, granted I'm certain someone (or group) could do this, would I really want to trust it to McAfee to do it?
I'm in complete support of Apple on this, the FBI can piss off and do it them selves. But putting together a crack band of people to do this seems like an even worse issue.
Also John didn't say anything about anyone other than himself getting paid according to the article. . .

It's kind of scary there are so many better hackers in the outside world than at the FBI.

There has been a lot of chatter on his Facebook page about how to do this without wiping the phone after 10 tries.
Someone said you can do a byte-by-byte copy of the drive, and then just keep trying and trying.
I wonder if that is doable.

I've proposed that in the past as the "there is no such thing as full protection via hardware". The theory is that the "burn" mechanism is so close to the drive that you can't do a byte by byte copy, but I find it unlikely that that is true.
