New User does not create Home folder

  • Been hoping that this would self resolve over night. But alas it did not.

Site with Folder Redirects running having issues with not being able to delete files from the desktop. Can't delete from the home folder on the server as they don't replicate to the server.

Moved the folders so that they should auto recreate, but that also didn't work. Created a completely new user - but now on sign on it is not creating the home folder on the server.

Created another user just to test, and again does not create the home folder, nor going to another computer at the site will create the folder.

Any thoughts and suggestions while I exercise some google?

  • Why would this happen??

Users are all in a OU called User Accounts which has sub OUs for assignments. This is where I was creating the new user, and it failing.

Went to the Users OU and created the user, and it created normally. There's a nice new folder in the Redirect Folder.

    Why would the location matter?

Create in User Accounts/Bookkeeper it failed. But creating in Users succeeded.

  • Folders in that list that don't have the double folder within a folder icon are not OUs. As such GPO's don't apply to objects in them.

learned this the hard way a long time ago.

@Dashrender That's a handy bit of insight. Thanks for that comment!

Agreed - that may solve quite a number of reoccurring issues we have with that site.

I guess I don't understand what this means. What icon are you talking about?

I recall Scott telling a story where he was Windows certified up the wazoo but had never heard of, let alone used robocopy. Sadly this tid bit of knowledge - I don't recall it being offered up during my reading and getting certified in Windows Server 2008.

    Useful information. Thank you.

  • Well I saw the title and thought you meant Linux home folders and thought I could give some insight. Ha never mind :-P

  • Yep, those are containers. When you head into you Group Policy Management Console, you'll notice things like 'Computers' and 'Users' aren't listed there to which you can link your GPOs.

That users folder is the system users container not a OU per se. no GPOs
