Windows 7 Hope this is Right Place

  • I have a problem, we have moved to Windows 7. When Vista came I tested and updated software to run in case we went this route. I researched differences between Vista and Windows XP positing concerns with in house applications we use and Vista's (NON XP) setup. Took a couple of months, I had to learn to run Vista, Read Vista, eat Vista, you know, the learning curve - it is always there. Fine, did not go with Vista - sure and I know quite a bit about Vista, and Run it at home. Please reserve comments to yourselves (about my home use), unless you have the background in Vista that I have obtained. Windows 7 came out. Curious, went thru Windows 7 run 7 read 7 eat 7 etc. Well quite a few of my notes from Vista translated over to Windows 7 - Example - tasks that run and clean desktop icons Sunday's at 1 am. Win 7 yes, Vista yes. Then came 32 vs 64 bit, at first everything was XP to Vista upgrade, or XP to Windows 7 upgrade, most of these Items were 32 bit, not much to change along these lines. But we want 64 bit Windows 7. Wow, what's the difference? Well with WoW there is a translator and if you don't need any hardware to communicate with the wow 32 bit translation going on, sure 32 bit programs work fine. But what about the 32 bit usb dongle? Need 64 bit driver, Manu says not gonnna do it. Run 32 bit Win 7. Sure, keep 64 and 32 bit drivers laying around, and when you come to a workstation remember to load the right drivers.... Next, deadline approaching, a fast push. Submit report on software, hardware, server applications, everything I know that will still have "Problems" (may not be in your face problems, but the best one's never are) and pretty much get the ignore. HEH. The first image out was a disaster, our flagship program installed but would not take the service release it needed to run in 7 - 64. HUH? I set this up, I know this release works and the service release works also, have installed on many test systems. My Peers, and My 'Boss' OH, -- it was the Client Access, IBM AS400. HUH this stuff is bullet proof, and so I downloaded another service release in case our copy had been corrupted. Nope, Still wont install. Had 8 pc's out there before I finally was able to find a software package that would not do its thingy (in 7 - 64) and the problem was repeatable - (dual monitors--no way also). They asked me to create an image and install the software "Sure". I gave them a functioning W7, 64, with Client Access V6R1M0 W/ SI42423 Win 7 64 bit approved, while loading the new 7 AV and all updates, and Company software etc. etc. Printers, Scanners, drivers 64bit in a library, and ready to go. They took my image and left - next thing I know, new pc's start showing up, now with new problems. Sure Client Access runs but can't connect thru active directory, scanners locking up trying to inventory pc's - all manner of items. Took this new info to my "Boss"? He mentioned to me -- not exact quote but close-- Everything you do is not perfect, and essentially Keep your nose out of it?????? was his reply. Wow, I will be cleaning up this mess in the next coming weeks-years, unless I am lucky enough to find a janitorial job. I have worked here 10+ years, and the rep I had as an outside tech, who was popular, has now faded, and most of my old clients are retired (or worse). I am stuck knowing the strange issues (that have already) and will pop up will be my new job here for maybe years to come. I know it's Job security right? Well come sit in my chair and feel what job security feels like. Knowing I will be fixing broken items while they still will be broken is kinda pointless if you ask me, I know you did not. Treating Windows 7 + Windows 7 security like it is XP is deplorable. I am now an outcast, and not many in my department are talking to me, except, had to reboot this server this AM, They came to me and said ---can't imagine what's going on with that? HUH? actually I felt HA HA HA HA. Now when asked - Can you fix this (With duct tape or the keyboard?) Yes I can fix what is broken but it will still be broken. It is the OS that is the problem, the main brain for all other items on the pc, sure I can fix this problem, but the main problem will remain. I have already had users ask me IF I could rebuild their PC's Correctly. Sure, but convince MGMT, or better yet convince them there is even a problem. Yes I feel sorry for myself, sure I don't know how my big mouth got me into so much trouble? So goes IT.

    That is pretty crappy.

So, if I stumbled my way through that correctly, you were an XP shop that refused Vista (won't argue that) but then never updated to 7 until now?

I put that squarely on bad management/planning/something. Windows 7 has been out for years and was stable out the door. You should have been migrating long before now.

Obviously not knowing anything more about your or the company you work for I cannot truly understand the situation, but from the outside looking in, I feel bad you are stuck in this position now, but it was an avoidable issue. Someone up the chain messed up by putting this off.

  • Yes, you are right this is the wrong place to Fu** up your post. Never should have written at the end of the day, in a hurry.
I assure you wont happen again, spiiel check should help that. Not enough info, I know I work in IT, Isnt the story long enough, Missed quite a few stumbling blocks, but if I took on 7 educationally, hmm probably couple of years back. Point was, Yes MGMT was irresponsible, I should have pushed harder, but as I said, Maybe I pushed too hard. Work for dolts, get dolty systems. Problem being, I took us from 98 to XP as a consultant to this org. They said "that was the smoothest transition we ever had..." Expected the same this time, hmmmm. Still not enough info, so I leave you here hanging.
    Thanks and so long.

Sounds like you've determined that it is time to start looking for something else. Once you know that you are in an unhappy place it is hard to turn that around. If management doesn't appreciate your work, they never will.

What makes you so good? How do you do it? You can diffuse situations, reply to everything and have all the answers (I mean that in a good way, not cynical). I still say as I stated in the past, You are more than one person. You have to be, no one person is that good..... LOL. If you are one person my hat is off to you, however if you are a team,,, Still my hat is off to you! Thanks for your 'advice' especially the freebee's I did not have to read if I became offended (grammer Nazi). You know, Mgmt needs work and so do I, however I am willing to acknowledge that fact, Others not so receptive.
    Thanks, Chris K.

Please don't stumble thru any more of my posts, I know we have different styles, and I really am not asking anyone to read anything they don't understand. If you find my writing confusing because of my style then you have the option to quit reading at any time. I don't expect critics of my posts, I just vented. Not to offend anyone - If I find a post hard to read, I stop reading, and do not reply if I am not sure where this is going no need to let the writer know of my disappointment in their style of communication. Yes, I am a computer geek not an English major, If I was you could read my junk easier. Thanks for Reading anyways - I am sorry I wasted 5? minutes of your life.
    Thanks Chris K.

A wall of text is not easily readable. Breaking the text up will help with comprehension.

Getting horribly insulted and making multiple posts whining because of a simple comment about needing a carriage returns seems to be a bit much.

I read your post and no where stated anything was a waste of time. I also responded with sympathy for you and specifically pointed out it was an avoidable mistake but blamed that on management based on your post.

  • @JaredBusch
Yes, it is a hard time for me, I usually give better than I receive. Whining about it does not make it better for you or for me. In essence I am sorry.
I am new to this site, still feeling my way through things - built up expectations -etc. You have my take on one side of a problem I have here at work. Without Management chiming in - how do you know if I am being honest with you or just making myself look better?

It would be easy to browbeat others and create scenario's where I am the hero and they are the villain, but we all have our reasons for doing things the way we do - right - or - wrong.

You be the judge? How on such meager amounts of information! It is like asking a pc graphic's problem but leaving out you are running corel x6 on a 486/66 with 64M Ram with onboard video, then asking "Why are my 5 meg JPG's taking so long to open? You would naturally assume (at least I may) core 2 duo, 1g ram, at the slow end - but alas Assume came onboard.

Thanks for your input, that is what was important. I may have been fishing, and you took the bait. Left me with some good advice, I unfortunately reacted hastily with hostility and jumped on you for it. No matter, It makes me look bad, but going with the rest of the story, I cannot convey the intense feeling of frustration to you I was under trying to avert what I perceived as a minor/major disaster (still not an excuse for that reaction).

Look how it rolls, downhill, even to people you don't know... Dealing with change easy, dealing with intense emotion's "Crazy Man". Again, Sorry, and thanks.... Maybe someway I can make amends? Then there is always time. Thanks!
