So we're looking for a new color printer that can handle 11x17 printing. We do not need brochure or photo quality, just something reasonably priced (initially, and over time). Any suggestions or ones to avoid?

I think that @thanksajdotcom is who you need on this one.

I'm certainly open to @thanksajdotcom's input, but I was looking for experience based recommendations from others as well if there was any to be had.

Are you looking for color or b/w only?

                Color

Is this something that's going to be used sporadically or more regularly?

Fairly infrequently. I'm guessing the duty cycle is going to be below 200 PPM.

At less than 200ppm - why not look at a local printer such at Staples or Office Depot? Limited use could spell higher costs per page due to ink waste.

We frequently have to print things that contain sensitive data, so using a service for those jobs is not feasible.

Ah - In that case,.. you have to control the printer.

Working with sign shops you have many options, inkjet, laser, and since there is low page count ink price may not be a consideration. You can find many printers from reputable company's that run from 12-13" to ***. Epson and HP come to mind. If ever you wish to expand your PPM, Laser would beat Ink in cost per page if that is a consideration for you. And if you ever wish to expand your page size, a few extra inches would not be a bad idea also. Look to the future.

Never looked for large format before, but are they all ink? A quick google only showed ink to me.

I think it is because of the fuser. The bigger the format, the less likely to be laser.

Laser Wide format printers are crazy expensive compared to ink.

Fusers that look like large print heads for heat/thermal transfer are used. One that is a film printer, and yes expensive, is the Gerber Edge, it uses film for a very clean output. On vinyl.

Large-format lasers are rare. Insanely expensive too.

For your volume, I'd say the HP OfficeJet 7612.

The other one that wouldn't be bad is a Brother. The Brother is going to have lower cost/page but for your volume, the HP will suit your needs just fine.
