As part of the degree program I am currently involved in I'll eventually be gaining the following certifications:

-Oracle Certified Associate, Java SE 7 Programmer
-Oracle Certified Professional, Java SE 7 Programmer

In regards to a career, and possibly making a switch to strictly Software Development, how relevant are certifications when you are considering candidates? Say you had a Java Developer with 1 year of verifiable relevant experience and the above certifications versus another candidate with 3 years verifiable relevant experience and no certifications. Which would be more appealing?

What, if any, other additional desirable certifications exist for software developers?

I'm not a developer, but in my experience it's going to be completely dependent upon the HR person (goon) that reads your resume.

Never seen developers hired in the real world by HR people. That's stated a lot, but I never see it happen. I think it's mostly, but not entirely, a myth repeated by the SMB community.

In all my years of interviewing on both sides of the table, I've never seen a shop look at development certs one way or the other. They've always been ignored and generally don't exist. Most development paths don't have certifications so it is rare for people to look for them. And using them to differentiate is hard because it would favour people in stodgier paths.
