@scottalanmiller It's a loss leader. Think about it. The penny deals at Staples during back to school. They get small revenue on it but it's still costing more to ship and store and stock than it's selling for. Spiceworks has a team for dev and support on the app. I find it hard to believe they are making any money on the app itself. At best I'd guess they come close to breaking even. But the general term is loss leader. You are going a little too literal...

At staples that is a loss leader. They actually lose money. Spiceworks never meant for the community to make money. They actually make profit on the helpdesk app. It's not the loss leader. It's the product that they intended to sell.
-
@scottalanmiller And sell access to vendors.
-
It's a little bit literal but one is intended to pull someone in. The other was the actually goal.
-
Yes. It may be what the original plan was but it's most certainly not anymore. So would it be more appropriate to refer to it as the gateway drug?
-
I wish they made their AD Manager free I really like it.
-
@ajstringham they still feel the app is the product.
-
@scottalanmiller Who does? If it's anyone it's the exec team. I can guarantee the sales team knows it ain't. The CMs know it ain't. Anyone working IT there knows it ain't.
-
IT team? You mean one guy?
-
@scottalanmiller Yea...poor Kris...
-
@scottalanmiller Doesn't change the point of my post though. Only people who might be clinging to legacy thinking as far as the company are founding/early members.
-
Well, we already have our ServiceDesk Plus demo up and running on Rackspace!
-
@scottalanmiller when'd you do that? Just now?!
-
-
@scottalanmiller Okey dokey.
-
I'm playing with the SaaS model this morning. Love what I'm seeing so far, but trying to import my AD users isn't going well. The provisioning app refuses to bind - tells me I have the wrong username or password...but the same combinations work fine in LDP.exe
-
Is the SaaS model free too?
-
Eh, doesn't matter for us. We have two custom created ticketing systems along with Remedy and one we finally phased out a year ago. We are supposed to be folding in all the others into our one single product, but that's gonna be way down the road.
Although it might be good to have it under my belt when it comes around to looking for jobs. Also doesn't hurt that one of our customer's uses it for their service.
-
It runs on JBoss which is interesting.

Assuming MySQL is driving the DB?
