      As far as I know
RTO = Recover Time Objective - The amount of time it will take to get a failed system back online

RPO = Recover Point Objective - How much data do I loose from this moment backward.

RTO and RPO are very useful for providing a rough "SLA" to the business. That way if something fails there are not really any surprises. Of course, it is really important to keep in mind that these are objectives only. Something else can always go wrong and make the times far worse.

However for planning these concepts are horrible because of how they are used. We should not approach our business goals with these terms or concepts because the decision process is all about having a cost to risk curve and making a business decision of what balance to make. You can't approach solely from the cost or the risk perspective without missing half the data necessary to make a useful decision. And yet, people often do.
