An oldie but a goodie: Final Fantasy
The original? What platform?
PlayStation 1 "Final Fantasy Origins" played on a PS 3. My NES is likely at my parent's home in storage.
That's the enhanced 3D remake, I believe? I have that one on Android.
I think this is the one before the Android / iOS / PSP version

Elite Dangerous again. About completed my first 5000 light year journey in the process of unlocking egineers.

It's really just a huge sandbox. It's got a few more activities you can do if you want, like the engineers stuff I'm unlocking at the moment. None of it is mandatory tho.
It really does have a bit of a learning cliff. Start out slow by completing the tutorial and slowly customize your control setup as you do new things (don't guess! Do a thing before changing keybindings.)

I don't have a full HOTAS, just a joystick. Granted it's got enough 4way hat switches to be a poor mans imitation. HOTAS would be nice for combat, but that's about it. Everything else I'm way more efficient with keyboard and stick.

Exactly, it is SO bad. I loathe it. It's so bad that I hate my kids using it. I'm so tired of having to "fix" things that should never be issues.

It's super simple, but a lot of fun. But only if you have friends to play with. It's not a game to play on your own.
