If people are really interested in this let me see what I can work out. I could run a game late-ish on a Wednesday or Thursday every other week or once a month.

I could def swing it if we did it monthly. I'd love to see who is interested in doing this if it becomes a possibility.

I could handle either of those days. I'd prefer a time later in the evening, around 8pm EST.

D&D night.

D&D went well last night. We ended at 12:30 AM and I am completely dead

I run my game from 7-11 Central.
I have been running an online D&D campaign since June 29, 1999. Originally did an 8-12 slot, but that killed the east coast players every time we ran late.
So I migrated to 7-11 CDT/CST and have been that way ever since.
A couple years ago I even found the text chat log from that first game.
https://daerma.com/chat-logs/1999-2/tue-jun-29-1999/I have a lot more, as well as audio files from later games. I really need to get off my ass and get this all organized and posted.

I'd like to do something like this when the two new guys get more accustomed to actually roleplaying. Combat seems to draw people in but when the roleplaying ends up being the most fun imo

I've never witnessed someone make that transition. People who like it long term tend to join for the role playing. The combat stuff tends to turn those people off so you risk losing people if there is too much of that and too little role play.

Especially in the group I'm playing with now the role playing aspect is the hardest to get people involved in. I had the same thing happen in another group. Takes time to come out of your shell for some people

So much this. You will never convert people from one to another style of play. Yeah sure, the odd person might, but I can say that in all my years of playing, I have never met said person.
If you try and force it you will have nothing but unhappy players or DM.
We certainly have role playing and there are rare nights that we have no combat at all, but it is rare. We are a combat encounter focused bunch really.
That does not mean that we have no story or roleplaying.
Both of these happened in game:

I think I'd actually have a lot more fun DM'ing than I would playing but I need to learn a lot more about...everything practically.

Hard to make a transition when the system actively discourages role play. Recent editions of D&D are largely a miniatures battle first and an RPG as a way distant second(at best) priority.
If you are interested in story input and role playing from players you probably want to look at other systems. If you are happy with the way things go currently then play on!

If you're group is open to other systems. I'm in love with FATE. FATE is kind of the one-sized fits all system so it does a lot of things surprisingly well as long as you have a creative, and open, gaming group.

Fate is definitely a good one, it is based on FUDGE. Both Fate and FUDGE are OGL these days.
There are a number of interesting games created using Fate like Spirit of the Century which is meant for creating pulp stories.

It is the players not the system, barring 4e.
Recent editions of D&D are largely a miniatures battle first and an RPG as a way distant second(at best) priority.
While 4e was this, 5e is not. Prior to moving to Chicagoland, I was a player in a D&D group every other Friday in a 3.5e campaign. That campaign was many, many nights of story encounters and the dice were rolled more for skill checks than combat. It all comes down to the players.
If you are interested in story input and role playing from players you probably want to look at other systems. If you are happy with the way things go currently then play on!
This is certainly true. there are definitely other systems out there for a more pure roleplaying/story-telling game.

I ran this by our group and I think I'll probably end up DM'ing this. I basically have infinite time to learn everything since we are currently doing a D&D campaign that just started

I've never had the pleasure of (regularly) playing D & D or the like. I had some friends and we'd play a short round any time we hung out as kids. (His Dad would always play the DM, lol).
It was always a lot of fun.

It's a lot of fun especially with people you've known for a long time and like (just my opinion). Dynamic storytelling is almost always interesting to me
