Troubles with HP



  • Sigh! I'm sending in a Probook, under warranty for the fourth time in under two months.

    Originally I sent it in because it was acting very sluggishly. Reinstalling windows, updating all drivers, nothing helped. When I got it back, they had reimaged it with the factory install, but otherwise wasn't any better. I called them and reported the same issue, only this time I was running into the occasional boot times when the system would state no boot device found, so I sent it in and they replaced the drive. I get it back, put my own image on it, and damn if it's still not still slow as molasses. And now 50% of the time it's booting to no boot device found. Before I actually mailed it off, it wouldn't boot at all.
    Well, I received it back today, booted it up, took it with me to use at a remote site and guess what?!?! still slow as a slug! and the no boot device issue is still there.

    I'm really at my wits end - This unit has a full year still left on it's warranty, but I've wasted at least 10 hours on this damned thing, my wage has definitely gone over the top of the cost of the unit...

    It goes back to them again tomorrow.



  • You have sent that thing in enough times. Demand that they replace it.

    If they won't do it, reach out to the HP guys over on SW (or here if there are any around).



  • I agree with @dafyre - you should reach to a higher level at HP for this now having sent it so many times for basically the same issue.

    I curious as to why it is so slow. Can you boot from a Live USB of Linux and test it any? Bypass the HDD and OS and maybe do a benchmark test.



  • I haven't booted from a Live CD - suppose I could before I ship it off this time...

    I'm guessing it's slow because of a bad motherboard. I had an HP a few years ago that had problem after problem for the end user, but it was never producible for support. Finally several months later the sound stopped working.. they replaced the motherboard and things were much better.

    I fully suspect the MB in this case. I originally felt that maybe the HDD was going bad, but after two replacements that seems unlikely.



  • OK I've booted off a Ubuntu Live CD and things seem to be working pretty good. This doesn't mean there isn't a problem with the HD controller on the motherboard though.



  • Still working? You could do something to pound on the HD from the LiveCD to see if that is generating any errors.



  • OK - let's talk this through. Let's assume there are no errors generated when pounding on the HD, now what?

    I need to be able to boot reliably from the HD (which is failing off and on) and have Windows (specifically the mouse) be responsive.

    Suggestions on ways to pound on the drive other than downloading a large file?

    sure, not HD controller, but where would I go from there? what do I fix to solve my problem? And what should I use to beat on the HD? Just start a large download?

    FYI, the trackpad does seem to be working fine in Ubuntu Live.



  • Did the trackpad not work nicely in windows?

    This sounds like cold solder joints + heat + flexing - don't know what to say about the trackpad

    If different OSes work, there is a very real possibility that it is a driver issue.



  • Moving the mouse around the screen worked flawlessly, but clicking provided HUGE delays 2-3 seconds. This is/was the original issue. I doubt it's bad solider joints.

    After the second time sending it in for repair, that when the HDD boot errors began. They are much worse when the system has been running for 15 mins +.

    I wouldn't expect a driver problem to cause the HDD error provide bootable media.



  • OK, for those that tossed out drivers.

    I've reinstalled Windows 7 from MS provided ISO. During the setup, the keyboard was occasionally unresponsive, as well as clicking the mouse.

    Now inside the OS with no non OS provided drivers, the mouse moves just fine, but the system is super slow to respond to clicks. Clicking 10 times in the same spot brings the window into a "not responding" state.

    Probably could just install Linux rather then using it Live only. Would be it on the HD and make it work the same way as Windows.

    Yes, after which I reinstalled Windows 7 x64 Pro with only the HP NIC driver - same ol' problems with mouse and performance.

    IF i get down rebuilding the cryptowall machine tomorrow I'll see about installing Ubuntu on this problem laptop and see what it does.

    No, I've been remote working today pulling that infected machine out of service, and solving others issues since i was there.
