So we all know that @handsofqwerty loves working with people directly and has a lot of experience in the direct to end user sales and support market and enjoys it. He talks about it regularly. He is often frustrated by the inability to deliver high quality end user support due to restrictions, politics, realities of big box store life.

Perhaps the answer for AJ is to run a small sales and support store of his own. A place where he has input into the selection of what is sold, a place where he can make high quality support a priority and a place where when he builds a reputation he gets to keep that reputation rather than having his personal reputation ruined by a store and what reputation he builds being kept by the store when he leaves.

So that's my thought. AJ needs to open his own store. Thoughts?

He should open a store, that offers 15% less than the Big Box stores too!

Then there is a question of where. I'm down in Panama and honestly I think that something like this would actually work here. Lower overhead to get started, nice quality of life and a lack of competition. Easy to import parts, low taxes and an affluent local user base.

Good thought, but I don't think he has the startup capital to do anything brick and mortar. I recommend that he starts freelancing online. It isn't high profit, but its an easy and free way to start your own branding.

It's not a bad idea, it would give AJ the freedom to pursue what he likes to do. If you are passionate about your job, you tend to do well.

Scott, you should fund his venture. That you've created.

I speak some Spanish too, so that'd be good!

@handsofqwerty It starts with packing a bag, getting a VISA, and driving down there... After that... just follow your feet! 8-)

He's an American national, no need for a Visa to get started in Panama.

@scottalanmiller I thought Visas were required for international travel? Is that only true for overseas type travel?

It just depends on where you are going. Most European countries have an agreement with the US so neither side require visas. I think China and Russia might require them, but I'm not positive.

Europe you can only work for 90 days and can't open a business without a visa.

No, almost nowhere requires a visa (not Visa, that's the credit card) for travel. Overseas or otherwise. Venezuela, China, Iran... they requires visas of course for Americans. Pretty much none of the developed world requires them until you plan to stay over 90 days and Panama doesn't need one until you plan to stay and work over six months (and if you violate it in Panama the fee is just $50, so no big deal.)

There is the concept of an automatic, paperless visa when you go somewhere. So you could say that you have a visa, but most travels are unaware that they even exist as no one mentions it and you never get anything and you never apply.
