Didn't want to muddy the other thread. But as travelers or people living abroad, we run into a lot of young people, mostly around college age, doing something similar. Backpacking Europe, exploring Central America or whatever. In the US you effectively never see this. Elsewhere in the world it seems to be everywhere. Every little town has someone, mostly from the US, UK, Germany, Holland, etc., staying there for cheap and there mostly to just soak up the culture and learn about people, places, etc.

They might be couchsurfing (staying in peoples' living rooms for free), hosteling (staying super cheap in a bed in a hostel for as little as $5 a night), workaway (working for room and board) or something similar. Some even backpack along roads or in fields!

These are two "kids" who did about five months of backpacking around Europe. They came and stayed with us for a month in Spain and did a long weekend with us in Morocco. This is a picture of them taken near Tarifa, Spain. That is Morocco (Mt. Abraham) in the background. We had just gotten off of the ferry returning from Morocco.

They spent months wild camping and couch surfing their way around the UK, France, Belgium and Holland before coming to Spain. Then went on to France and Germany before going back to the States. We expect to see them in Europe relatively soon, again.

Being the traveling people that we are, @pchiodo and I went to a hostel in El Valle, grabbed all the people there and took them all to the local bar. It's a great way to meet people and make new friends. We met people from California, Pennsylvania, Germany and Montreal in that particular night out drinking, along with buying beers for the whole local bar, which went over quite well. Lots of friends now in El Valle.

This one girl ended up hitching a ride with Paul back to Panama City (several hours away) and ended up coming out with us all several times. She is a backpacker that just explores the world soaking up culture.
