Crowds awaiting the tsunami in Valparaiso
They don't look that elevated to me.. .are they not expecting more than a 50 ft wave? Even that would seemingly be high enough to get them from the picture.
61ft was measured at sea which means far larger could hit land. They were expecting potentially quite a lot of water. Ended up not hitting 20ft at landfall, though. But you have to get to much higher ground than the height of the tsunami for safety.
Please, oh please, let the sea wash away that idiot convention.... none should weep for you because you did something profoundly stupid and died.

They are way higher than 100ft over sealevel there.

"Gonna be a totally epic storm surge bro... WOOOO!!!!!"
Actually, when I lived in FL, on the Gulf side, a storm surge was the only opportunity the locals had to try surfing.... The Gulf of Mexico is basically a warm, salty, calm lake. So I got to go out and watch that epic 3ft break....

@RojoLoco we have an entire town here dedicated to those same sorts of nutters. Granted the waves are bigger, but it's so flipping cold that many wear dry suits.

Nichelle Nichols -- famous for her role as Lieutenant Nyota Uhura on Star Trek -- took to the skies this week on a NASA mission aboard SOFIA Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy, the largest airborne observatory in the world! The 82-year-old Nichols has collaborated with NASA for decades to help them recruit more diverse candidates to the space program and encourage young people's interest in science.
