Apparently that initial report was wrong. Now they're stating that Tom Petty is clinging to life.
Rumour is that he is off life support and not expected to make it long. Apparenlty the PD released a false statement earlier.

So odd, he's a HUGE artist.

No one uses them as a national ID. That's illegal. Private companies use them, but that's not at all the same thing.

Tha'ts why you can sue so easily for compromised IDs, because they compromised something not backed by anyone.

Not using SSN as the national ID. Which we don't do currently. So they are proposing "no change."
That's over stating it. It's correct to say it's not a national ID, the federal government doesn't recognize it as a national ID, but MANY institutions do use it as a primary basis of identification of a person.
The article specifically mentioned using
"modern cryptographic identifier," like public and private keys.
Though this will likely fail miserably as well. The only way it works is if the only person who has the private key is the citizen, but what happens when the citizen undoubtedly looses/misplaces their private key?
