Have you looked a Forge as a replacement? It generally runs a version or two behind though so that may not be what we want. http://www.minecraftforge.net/wiki/

The server is running again. There rebooted it after they corrected the issue.

Punch all the wood. Then use that to make planks. Use planks to make a crafting table. In the crafting table place two planks one on top of the other to get 4 sticks. Then create a T shape with 3 planks and 2 sticks. That should get you a pickaxe.
