Not since the days of configuring IRQ's for sound cards have I had a perplexing problem.

My new Dell XPS X8700 has an onboard 7.1 sound device. I am only using stereo so plugged into the standard audio out. This worked fine until a few days ago when no audio was coming out. Couldn't figure it out...

Went into the sound settings and saw this...

Since I use HDMI from the video card to the monitor, it is wanting to use the lone audio out on the monitor (which I totally forgot I had) and problem solved.

However, I'd rather come straight from the PC audio jacks, especially if I do use 7.1 or even do some audio input. I can't seem to ENABLE the "High Definition Device"...I went into the Nvidia control panel and disabled the audio via HDMI:

Same problem...will not recognize the onboard jacks...keeps saying speaker not plugged in.

I'm guessing I could try to use DVI for my monitor input and see if that resolves it but haven't yet...would rather keep it like this (My MacMini is connected via DVI)...

      Any clue?

Yes. I think that I have fixed this before... a few years ago. 😞 I can't quite recall how though

As daft as it sounds, can you disable the audio via the settings in your monitor?
How old are your nVidia drivers?

In Device Manager --> Sound, video and game controllers --> what is in there? Is anything disabled?

I can only turn volume down to 0 through he monitor...it seems like the HDMI/Monitor combo has taken over my sound...I've disabled the device, even went back to DVI to test...it still shows up as the only audio device I can actually enable...very frustrating...

Under Sound, video and game controllers, I show HIGH DEFINTION AUDIO DEVICE and REALTEK HIGH DEFINTION AUDIO . Both are ENABLED.

@garak0410 I had the same issue and had to remove HMDI from the monitors and use VGA and 3.5 jack for sound.

            Post about it here: http://mangolassi.it/topic/3048/dvi-to-hdmi-equals-no-sound/8

Just tried this...it STILL detect the HDMI audio of my video card...still no sound from the jacks on the onboard audio. Might be a reminder to me why I always build systems...this is my first pre-built (and first Dell) at home in years...

Yeah...I can live with audio from the monitor but I plan on doing some audio input...at worse, I could reload Windows but dang, I just went through all the steps to move my Plex Server too...:(

Have you tried disabling this one?:

                      HIGH DEFINTION AUDIO DEVICE

Yeah...still shows NOT PLUGGED IN on the onboard audio jacks...baffling...

This may add light to the situation...for grins, I took out the included GeForce GTX 745 and put it into another PC I had. Plugged it in with VGA...booted...no sound, on a different PC (Lenovo ThinkServer T140)...plugged in via HDMI and plugged speakers into monitor...bam...working...removed the GTX 745 card, plugged into the onboard VGA...no sound...no matter what I tried...something in that digital audio from the video card permanently kills onboard audio, somewhere in the settings...any clue how to fix that? (may need another subject for this)

Also of note, I did a clean install of Windows 8.1 on the Dell and onboard sound still not working...but what is equally frustrating is now my Lenovo has no sound, even when removing the GeForce card and removing all drivers and devices.
