If this statement is true, then you are NOT required to install ESX on that old box. Which is it?
I'm not installing ESX anymore. I told him yesterday I am going in a different direction which I think is a much better plan and he said okay. I'm not talking about one specific scenario, I'm talking about everything across the board. I can't handhold my boss.
Why can't you? Isn't that the reason you are there? To protect him from himself? He's your one L1, I assume?
No, it's my boss. the "Server admin"
But he's an L1, right?

Isn't your main job to handle escalations from him for things that he can't handle.
It's good that he listened and changed direction. But that was what you had been saying couldn't be done. So Jared was correct that you did have the power to influence bad decisions

Well, he's below your L2 level Is the question that he might only be an L0?
-
The kinds of mistakes he's making SOUND like L0 mistakes. Those are definitely the very reasons we keep L0s away from access to things because they are never sure when they should touch things or not.
-
My additional concern is, is he learning from his own mistakes behaviorally? There must have been a train of thought there that he assumed was correct. Hopefully this scenario showed him flaws in his train of thought so that he could correct them for future improvement.

Sounds like there is a gap that isn't being addressed. But since he doesn't get fired, he has no incentive to improve.

@wirestyle22 No, not you. You have gone the next level of trying to learn from your peers. It is the other guy that I am concerned with.

IMO I'm not learning, at least not well enough. That was my point. I'm not trying to go into another tangent though

Talking about the "Intern" that isn't learning very quickly but as access to things he doesn't understand.

But you've learned enough to be dramatically senior to your boss. You are the top of your food chain.

First of all, keyword there was "trying". Second, you are learning what NOT to do in some aspects.

And learning... in an environment with no mentors, no training, nothing to achieve or aspire to. The environment gives no value to learning or doing a good job,

@scottalanmiller My apologies. He was referring to his work environment, when I assumed that he was referring to ML. My bad.

This is the only place I can go where I feel like I'm among my peers, even though I'm on the lower end of knowledge here

That's the case for most of us.
