I have a PBX system that I put in recently. Our Receptionist needs to be able to let someone know who is calling before transferring a call without shouting across the office. HELP!

This would be an attended transfer. The way we do it here is that we hit the transfer button. Dial the users extension, this will start the attended process, the receptionist will be able to talk to the person before transferring the call. Once the person accepts the call hitting the transfer button again will move the call over.

We use Yealink phones, but the functionality should be similar on many of the phones out there.

I don't need to do anything server side to make this work at all?

Yep, if you just wait a moment for the dial to go through it will put the first person on hold dial the second person and allow you to talk to them. Hitting the transfer button will connect the two calls.

I didn't have to. It just seemed to work. I use FreePBX though (I think Elastix uses that for something on the backend too).

Alright, I just tried it to make sure I'm not crazy. It works just as I described.

Our phone system has had this feature since day one, yet people take the long way. Put the caller on hold. choose another line, and call the internal person in question, then hang up, pick up the on hold caller, then finally transfer them.

Even after teaching them Announced Transfer, they still don't use it.

I trained people to do just that, for now, until I figured this out. However they just resort to yelling across the office 😞

Do you have call parking setup? It is a really handy work around for this. Although it takes about the same number of steps there is no need for the receptionist to pick the call back up to transfer it. Just call the 2nd person and tell them so-and-so is parked on line X.

Aww, forgot about this. We have this feature too, and use it a lot, well others do, I don't.

I think that that is @jenuinecase's strategy.

No we use Skype around here. Since most everyone (except myself) is in offices all over the country Skype works great for us. But now that I am done I will be checking this out.

On the Yealink phones, if you hit a BLF button to transfer to a person, it does a blind transfer by default. This is easily configured in the phone to not do a blind transfer but it is the default behavior.

If you want attended transfer, you need to hit the transfer button prior to hitting the BLF button. Because hitting the transfer button basically places the call on hold and opens a new line for you.

I would advise parking with caution. Just keep in mind there is one parking lot timeout destination by default in FreePBX / Elastix, and you set a specific timeout value as well. Anything on park for the amount of time specified would go to the single timeout destination. If you are doing some kind of multi-tenancy setup, that could cause a problem where someone on park for company A ends up getting to the receptionisy of company B. Oops.
