i5 and 4gb for $400 is hard to go wrong.

You might get a used one for a bit less. It would be slower but you'd get a better quality of build.

I very specifically want a touch screen laptop.
Touch is intuitive to my 6yo as she has had a touch device (iPod Touch) since she was 3.
Also I think touch will become better handled in this form factor over the next couple years.
So with that criteria, I was looking for a basic touch screen laptop.

I've had a ton of luck with Acer laptops. For personal use they've had excellent build quality. I've recommended probably a dozen over the past several years and have only had one with any major issues.

Personally, I think there are no worse computers than Acers. I've yet to see a decent Acer laptop. Their netbooks are a slightly different story but I've never liked their laptops. For what it is, the price is good, especially considering it's a touch screen. I'd say do it, but remember it's a disposable unit. SquareTrade might be worth it for you in this case, especially for a 6-year-old.

For a six year old? Overkill. That thing will be destroyed in a matter of hours. One drop and it's done. It's also probably weighs more than she does.
I would go with el-cheapo tablets instead.For me though, pretty good price. I need a machine to do stuff on while I am watching stupid shit on TV. Only problem with the machine is the 5400RPM drive. Luckily I have a cache of 7200RPM and SSDs I can use.

Since working with 4 clietns that bought Acer touchscreen AIOs last year, I can attest that Acer has figured out how to do touchscreens right. I would buy that laptop for your daughter!

Agreed you will want TouchScreen here on out with Windows Devices...my fear is the hard drive will slow it down...you may want to look at a SSD drive as an option or in the future...

@garak0410 Not sure about the unit that @JaredBusch first listed... but the Acer Aspire 2 in 1 boots rather quickly. While it's still new and I uninstalled much of the bloat ware (co-worker just got one Sunday), but thus far he's impressed with it.
There are upsides to installing a SSD though.. and drop the 1TB drive to a portable external unit - Win/Win.

I agree with AJ on the point that you need to remember this is a disposable device - as long as you go in with that mindset, Go for it!

My Acer came with a 5400 RPM drive... 5 years ago. The drive finally died and I replaced it with an SSD. I've got to say the performance difference is tangible I wish I had done when SSD prices started to come down.

The device is a learning tool. Not just for learning about how to use a computer, but also learning how to properly care of her possessions.
So because of that, it is not disposable. It will not be replaced easily.

She is 6 that doesn't mean she can't be very responsible. My son at that age had his own that he was responsible for fixing and updating. Kids can be responsible.
