In a Backup/Restore Pickle. Who wants to play super hero?
-
OK, Essentially I can't get a restore to work, here's the info:
-
Server 2008 x64 SP2
-
Backup Software - BackupAssist
-
Backup Hardware - Imation RDX External USB 2.0
If you want any more details on that front let me know. Server crashed, I got a call, overnighted new drives from xbyte (thanks brad) and found out that the raid controller was bad on the server as well. Brought a GL360 G5 from my lab and setup esxi (which was different from original config...it was installed on bare metal). So get to the point to try to restore and it looks like everything is working great but the restore never happened. Here's all the dialog box says (start reading from the bottom up for order of progress)
Starting restore
Catalogue detection Success
Starting Catalogue detection
Backup location connection Success
Starting Backup location connection
Snapshot completed successfully
Performing snapshot, please wait...So it will sit there as long as you let it. the application does not hang nor does it restore. So fast forward to today/rightnow. I chatted with @Dashrender a little bit and decided to install it directly to the hardware as it was originally configured. Maybe there was some wacky esxi usb pass through issue that wasn't slinging an error. NOPE, same show different day.
I have tried 3 other backup cartridges with the same result. anybody got any ideas?

And the final solution was?....

Quite likely not one yet.
@Hubtech no ideas to help you. Not familiar with the backup solution.
-
Actually - I know there was one, which is why I posted, remind him to com back and post here
He reinstalled Windows 2008 R2 server, this time x86, and the restore worked as desired.
-
OK so long story short.....Installed bare metal x86 server 2008 and ran all of the updates through SP2. Hooked up the drive, started the restore and boom, worked like new.
So up front I had two problems with their hardware (raid failed because of a bad controller) so all local data was gone, and no chance to recover it from the disks. AND their backup solution was trashy. New server comes in Tuesday/wed and i'll be using Hyper-V (B/C my GFI Backup plays well with it) and all will be well with the world. sorry if this is vague and scattered, but I'm tired and waiting on the Chinese to be delivered to my house.
@Dashrender thanks for letting me bounce probs off of you!

So I have a question about the RDX box,
What are you thoughts on it and it's throughput? are they decent enough? I've used the 'clone' from Dell RDX 1000 on the SATA bus.

-
What version of BA are you on and is it under support?
-
Just in case Hubtech doesn't get back for a while.
The version was 4 versions old and not under support.
-
@Dashrender What made you guys think of x86 instead of x64?

That was entirely his idea. He installed it every way he could think though - VMWare ESXi 5.5, x64 VM
Hyper V, x64 VM, Bare Metal X64 - During each attempt to restore the system would just stall out and do nearly or entirely Nothing. Try X86 was just the next step. -

Ouch. I've been a user since 6.0, and it's gotten much better. I made sure I purchased 3 years of support and update on a regular basis. 8.0 is super easy to use and works well with Hyper-V.

@Dashrender Makes sense!

I'd say stay away. I'm done with low level gear

What are the other options though?
Onsite tape? Internet based backup? Some people don't want their data out there, so that means using self controlled encryption keys.. etc.

Awesome. Go xByte!!

@Dashrender Synology stuff works good for NAS backups. You could use Rsync to sync two between locations or even sync them to the cloud. (keep in mind you might need to implement some kind of retention when using a sync method).

you can push backups to any NAS if you'd like. We will still do local backups, but i just love the ease of an online backup.

That's what my BA v8 backs up to, a DS412+. Works well and backups only take about 15-20 minutes tops.

it's pretty silly to me that a backup company would keep 9-5 business hours....
