      I've learned something in all my time being in call centers. There are three primary reasons why a technician puts you on mute:

      • They need to ask for help from a fellow technician/management on the situation at hand
      • They really need to vent out some frustration about this moron on the other end of the phone and how no one could possibly be this stupid!
      • They really need to pee

        Most people that I know use mute just to lower background noise.

            Certainly. But I see the other stuff much more. Taking a drink or something is a good reason, and common reason, people use mute though.
