my first attempt would be to image a HDD with Win10 using a surrogate machine, and then remove it/install it in the iMac, but I'm open to experience on the matter.
THat seems like the hardest option as it won't be prepped with drivers of any sort.

I'm going to try swapping out the failed HDD for a new one on this old iMac and see if I can't get Win10 on it. This is really just for fun.
iMac only supports Windows 10 after 2012. You are way too old on this one.

isn't bootcamp required to get Windows on a Mac?
AFAIK only if you want macOS available still, too. But maybe either way.

oh, is there a way to get the drivers without bootcamp? I know basically zero about Macs.

@dashrender With older Macs you have DVD disks with required drivers, and these were model specific. I couldn't use disks from Macbook Air on iMac. I think if he can boot from Windows 10 installation media and it recognizes storage controller, it should install and boot.

@scottalanmiller I'm reading a lot right now. It seems that it's been done, but it gets hairy with drivers.
I'm also reading that Linux works pretty well on older Mac's.

It should, yeah.

@mr-jones I've put Puppy Linux on a couple older imac/macbooks don't remember if they were that old though. 2009 time frame

2006 iMac
Just recycle it. This stuff is not worth more than the scrap value.
Not to mention '06? Likely a CRT. You have to pay to get someone to take a CRT.

2006 can't be a CRT. Can it?
Nope.
I had a look. 1999 was CRT. From 2002 it's LCD.
If it's a mid 2006 model, here are the specs:
https://apple-history.com/imac_mid_06Executive summary is that it's a 17" display, core 2 duo, 2GB RAM (max), 80GB HDD machine.

I didn't look. Was all my fallible memory.
But aside from the CRT statement, the rest is valid. This thing is not worth the effort being placed into it.

I agree! It was not even worth the effort to even look it up.
