It's interesting that deleted posts don't just get deleted, they appear to hang around a bit just grayed out and saying - this post has been deleted.

I've noticed that. It is definitely an odd approach although it provides some handy feedback in case you feel like some context is missing in a thread.

They can be redirected, yes.

We are trying to make sure that we do not remove any pertinent content when we do remove something. By having things just grey out, we are allowing the original poster time to reach out to us to resurrect their original post, so that nothing is lost in translation. We also are careful to only remove harsh words, instead of a complete post. We're doing this as an attempt to be fair.

Are you saying the ghosted posts are only those that were 'moderated'? not deleted by the person who made the post?

No when a person deletes their own things it also becomes grayed out. The development team will need to work on a way that we can differentiate between the two at some point.
