I'm likely to be sent home to work soon - I'm probably going to order a pair 27" for my home setup.. my current 19" are so tiny!

I'd be hard pressed to not get https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Double-49-Inch-Monitor-LC49RG90SSNXZA/dp/B07L9HCJ2V if I were replacing my 2 Dell U2415 monitors, or something similar to the Samsung. My situation is a little different, too, since I could take my wife's pair of screens (also Dell U24s) and give her the ultrawide so I could have 4 monitors.

I paid ~$400 for the 32" HP 2560x1440 that I have. It's the sweet spot for my eyesight for size/resolution. I'd really like to pickup a couple of the 40" 4k screens MicroCenter has, but don't have the money to drop on a luxury like that.

Philips has nice 40-43" 4K screens (16:9) for very reasonable money, not for gaming but for office work. We have a couple of them. Two different models, one curved and one flat. I think the curved one has been discontinued. They where like $600 or so.
A monitor that size has roughly the same screen estate as four 1080p HD monitors in the 22-23" range.

Anyone else using virtual monitors on your 4k setups? I've been using DisplayFusion's Monitor Splitting feature for this.
I only have a single monitor ATM, but this allows me to split it so that it behave like I have more than one.

I used to do that with linux. I think it was called fake xinerama/xrandr. It's standard functionality in X windows.

Nah, it's not that bad
Two 27" monitors side by side requires more space but have actually less screen estate.

Dang, 3 40's would take up a lot of desk real estate. Wish I had that much desk room for those.
They would take up the entire desk, even mounting one on the VESA adjustable arm mount that I have.

yeah, it's just not the same as actual separate monitors though. full screen on a specific monitor for example, or split screen.. just thinking out loud.

Virtual desktops works good for that. I set up 12 virtual desktops on my 40" monitor and switch between them with alt-ctrl+F1 up to F12 or the mouse.
The combination of large monitors and many virtual desktops causes you to work differently but more efficient. Basically you never maximize or minimize windows or use the taskbar to switch between application because there is no need to run anything in full screen. You just overlap the windows and use more virtual desktops when you need more space.
To keep my sanity I label the desktops if possible and always put certain things on certain desktops. For instance calendar, email and communication I always keep open on desktop 1. Music streaming and non-work related stuff on desktop 2. Then I have a couple of desktops where I remote into customers systems and run ssh and what not. One or two desktops where I manage our internal systems. If I need to research something I take an empty desktop and open up a browser or two there. So the desktops are kind of task related, not application related.
