How to set up Unifi Controller For Unrouted Private Network?



  • I got the Controller installed, finally. Now My Issue is setting up the AP to use the Unrouted Private network to provide a Wireless connection to tablets.
    The IP scheme at the site this tablet will be installed at is 192.168.128.x
    with 2 terminals at static IPs of .1 and .2

    How would I set up the AP to be on that Network with the same scheme?

    just not sure what it should be.

    This location, the server (a windows 10 machine designated as the server) is a multi-homed machine - on an internet connected leg, and on a private network leg.

    Will needs help assigning static IPs to the UAPs because he doesn't have a DHCP server on the private network. Then he has to ensure the Unifi controller, installed on Windows 10 (illegally license wise FYI) and point the UAPs to that controller, once the controller is ensured to be answering on the private network NIC.

    Guess I Missed a bit of information. Thanks for helping out-
    as far as the licensing stuff he mentioned above - that's out of my control, and I already know that it's not right and there's literally nothing I can do about it. So Keep that stuff to a minimum if possible.

    Another bit of information - The tablet will be Static IP (along with everything else on the private network) does that help?

  • Jared's instructions can only be followed if the devices already have a DHCP address so they can talk to the controller.

    So, if you're at your home office and you're setting these up, you could, as a last step, change their IPs as Jared pointed out. But once you're at the remote location, you'd have to put the controller and the devices on the DHCP enabled network, have the UAPs check-in, then update them, and move them.

    What I don't know - would Will then have to SSH into the UAPs to set the IP for the controller on the private network?

    Of course now Jared will say - WTF? you're making this way to hard.

    Those things aren't related. I'm specifically talking about the UAPs having their own broadcast protocol that they could use - something other than TCP/IP to talk to the controller - again, this seems unlikely.

    As for Aloha, I'm guessing it uses TCP broadcasts, and those should work fine, if they work on other APs they will work here.

    Those things aren't related. I'm specifically talking about the UAPs having their own broadcast protocol that they could use - something other than TCP/IP to talk to the controller - again, this seems unlikely.

    sadly - you really can't learn this in a reasonable time hands one. You need to either take a class so they really force/focus you on it - or read the book. Once you have a better understanding, much of this will be significantly easier.

    sadly - you really can't learn this in a reasonable time hands one. You need to either take a class so they really force/focus you on it - or read the book. Once you have a better understanding, much of this will be significantly easier.

    Subnet is always determined by the network. Without the subnet, you don't have a network. Conceptually a network isn't a thing without that. So you have to know what it is, you just don't realize that you know.

    I realized it because it wouldn't save.
    So i reset it to default and say i was missing /24 - which Im not exactly sure what that is for. But as Dash Said Above- I need to read the book I have and there's not much I can learn by doing (how I learn) when it comes to this.

    Right. This is basically just math. Math requires sitting down and learning. Then it's useful. But until you know it, you learn nothing from just trying to use it.

    /24 is the subnet mask.

    So a NETWORK is a grouping of resources. It's a list of addresses that work together. To know what network you are on, you have to know what those addresses are. So a network is defined as a range of addresses. A network address, like...

    192.168.0.0/24

    Tell you the first number of the network (192.168.0.0) and the size of the network (/24) which, when taken together, tells you every possible address on the network, because they have to be consecutive.

    That's what the subnet number is for.

    Networks are a one dimensional world, so this is a very simplistic example to mimic them.

    So to define your neighbourhood you give me a street address like (1275 Crescent St.)

    But that's not a neighbourhood, that's one house. That's just the first house of the neighbourhood, not he neighbourhood. But since we know the neighbourhood is all in a strait row one after another, you just need one additional piece of information which is "how many addresses" to add to the "starting address."

    So if we defined the neighbourhood as the next 100 houses, and we know the lowest numerical address in the pool, then it is trivial to know that the neighbourhood is every house from 1275 Crescent St. to 1375 Crescent St.!

    Very easy. Know where you start, and how far you go.
