Think that the next reports explain themselves... o Avast (and AVG)
"The data doesn't include personal information, but experts fear it could be 'de-anonymized.'"
https://www.engadget.com/2020/01/27/avast-jumpshot-selling-user-data/"Avast and its subsidiary AVG, caught selling customer data to corporate clients last year, are at it again—this time using its free antivirus programs if you opt in to data collection, a new report said Monday. "
https://www.pcworld.com/article/3516502/report-avast-and-avg-collect-and-sell-your-personal-info-via-their-free-antivirus-programs.htmlIf you aren't paying for it, you are the product being sold. (in many situations, free and open source obviously doesn't apply).

So what you're saying is that all these companies that profit from pilfered data should be paying ALL their users dividend checks for the profitability of their data?
I'm definitely saying that. Pay me, Zuckerberg, Bezos, whoever runs M$ now, etc.

Windows Defender... everything else is snakeoil. I always try to not laugh when someone says "But XYZ has a built in virus scanner for SSL connections"

They'll shift their resources to being license auditors.

@Dashrender They made throttle cables. Then, when HVAC started being incorporated the control leaver cables. Then, branched off into cables for bicycles when they became the norm.
-
@PhlipElder Oh, and can't forget the six pack and dual quad linkages either.
-
A bit OC, but... You won't believe what people sell - and what others actually buy. For example:
- Fibre cables with "gold contacts" -> https://www.reddit.com/r/askscience/comments/875f5k/optical_cables_with_gold_plated_connectors/
- RCA cable made from "old Japanese overland phone lines" wrapped in silk paper for just a few thousand dollars per meter (can't find the link ATM)
- On guy is offering a "cable ionization service" for better sound results via eBay where I live. Approx. 50-100 EUR per cable.

that wasn't the point - the point was that they either evolved to a new business - or died.
