I'd think it would be valuable just as a point of experience

I've always thrown it completely out when Ive done interviews, as have other hiring personnel in my experience.

No way to verify anything unless you start calling their clients.

It can also be seen as a negative by some because it shows your full attention wasn't on your primary position.

Does a part time consultancy mean anything on your resume?

        Yes, potentially a lot.

If your side business is something cool, it's a big deal. If it's replacing graphics cards on the weekend for kids, don't list it.

As companies never count it towards experience and its impossible for them to know the scale or amount of work you were doing.

This is true with full time, too, though. People put down full time experience and then it turns out it was one hour of their week for what they are listing.

If its ok to add volunteer work on your resume why not include part time consultant jobs too?

Yeah but it's the same for volunteer work. It's a talking point for the interview that you need to prepared for.

                And home lab experience, too.

I would think that if you were planning on "moonlighting" or whatever, that could be an issue for a potential employer.

Planning on is different. Everyone has done it in the past. Employers assume that they are people who admit it, and people who hide it.

Side businesses on your resume with a "period of time" date through "Current" is immediate disqualification in our company as a conflict of interest. Or potential conflict of interest, or just something we don't allow. Take your pick. If an employee takes just one 30 second call from a "side work" client while on our dime, they are immediately terminated.

Now, I would say, from the employee perspective; keep it secret.

By that logic, ANY current job would eliminate you as a conflict of interest. That just doesn't make sense as a disqualification.

From being on the hiring side and working with managers, it is always seems like either a negative or neutral at best. Because it isnt as easy to verify and no one knows effort put into it.

Its probably an unfair assessment, but that has been my experience. Its honestly been my independent opinion as well because more times than not I think it is filler.

How is that different than any job?

To be fair, that's how I view nearly all jobs and certainly all education.

@IRJ a big factor might be what the side jobs are. I've found that my side jobs have taken just as much precedence as my "real" job. But I also struggle to define which is my main and which is my side jobs.

I can only imagine that part of the issue is having side jobs that are like "helped with my buddies computer repair business" or "consult with local doctors to set up their networks" on the side.

My side jobs are things like "Ran the largest Windows migration even done for Dell with 65 sites across seven states. Worked as part of a joint Microsoft, Veritas, and Dell team working for all three companies. Ran the POC, the engineering setup, and then ran the project over the course of 15 months."

You are also interviewing for consulting roles, so it's relevant. That's not the case for most employee roles

Not really much different. And most everything I've done for the last 20 years is employee or employee-equivalent. And when I'm running interviews, it's for employees.

Right. However, putting your side gig (moonlighting) on your resume could tip them off that you would be doing it.

Yeah, its really neutral at best in most situations that I have seen.

There has to be an exception like being a part time teacher.
